preview pane disappeared!

I don't know how I did it, but with a stroke of the mouse i've managed to get rid of the 'preview pane' that enables me to read an e-mail without opening it (Apple might call it something different, but that's what it's called in Windows).

I've been through preferences and all the menu options, but can't find a way to switch it back on. HELP!

Locate the little dot (dimple) on the verticle bar on the right side, then click and drag to the left.

this is an answer to another person in this forum.

the 'hid the current mail in edit' fucntion in El Capitan is doing my head in. click outside of the mail im writing and it just disappears. I must say with al this autoshow autopeek sidebars in safari, autohide in mail app, and auto lets make everyuting impossible to find toolbars a-la-apple is starting to become ridiculous

Its as if they want us to just consume, and do no productivity or content creation. The Mac used to be for content creation

Now its become a media consumption device with all this stupid 'force touch to make a photo wiggle' ('live photos') I mean this little gimmick selfi stuff is ridiculous, i mean 2015 and the latest technology is used for a gimmick like a moving photo?
