Q: iCloud email and Messages "Failed to verify email."

While trying to setup Messages on 10.8 on my MacbookAir4,1, Messages gives me the error "Failed to verify email.  An error occurred while verifying 'xxxx@mac.com'".

After clicking the "Remove Email" button, the same Failed-to-verify-email error box pops up again.  And endless loop of this error message continues, which I have to quit Messages.

Any suggestions?

    HI,

UNtick the "Enable this Account" box

Then that "Account: will stop trying to do anything.

In Messages beta though you needed to get past this bit to "Activate" Messages Beta properly  (it would then find all your old iChat stuff and add them to the Accounts List).

Do you use this @mac.com account/Apple ID anywhere else ?

If you have not already can you use it to set up FaceTIme ?

The  "enable this account" is greyed out with a spinning progress wheel just to the right of it.

I do use this account for Facetime on my Retina Macbook Pro (10.7.3), this Macbook Air (10.8), and my iPhone 4.  I was never able to setup Messages on the iPad properly (probably due to a shared ID).

I have gone to the Apple ID accounts page and confirmed that all the other emails associated with this appleID are verified, however I don't need to verify the main @mac.com address since it is my iCloud address, right?

    Thanks Ralph!

    Hi,

The @mac.com name part is not an email and should not offer itself for you to verify  (at least you would think the process would actually check).

I tend to think of my iCloud ID being the @me.com bit and the older dial up email as the original Apple ID when I am talking about them - although, as you say, if you login to iCloud it will list the ID that created the iCloud ID which in my case is the original dial-up email.

What I could not do was get the "new" @me.com address listed as an email on the Apple ID page.

I could not even change the Apple ID to the @me.com one.

At this point I am sure it is something to  do with how busy the iMessages servers must be.

(on Wednesday when I started at about 7.30 pm there were about 14 Messages item in the Mountain Lion area and now there are 178 - and that just the people having issues)

I have a thought at the back of my mind that it may also matter which order you add the Apple ID to your devices.  I think it might pay to add it to Messages first then your iOS devices.

AppleID is the full email address, whether it's xxxx@mac.com or xxxx@me.com.  Both can be used interchangably and I have had no problem logging into iCloud or Apple ID anywhere.

The problem is that I can't actually use the primary AppleID as the messages account.  I have been successful at linking another email address to that AppleID (as you would in Facetime).  But it definitely seems like a bug with Messages since it's not verifying the actual address.

    Hi,

So you are not seeing the message listed here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5419

My personal feeling at the moment is that the servers are very busy trying to get everyone logged in and set up.

    Nope, not that error message.

So, for the moment, I'm using a separate email address linked to my AppleID for Messages on my 10.8 MBAir.

I also have separate linked addresses to use Facetime on my MBAir, and my 10.7 Retina MBP, and 10.7 MBPro (2008).

Neither messages nor Facetime on these 3 computers, my iPad 1, and iPhone 4 are allowing me to actually use my real AppleID.

    Mind-boggling how confusing this is.

    Hi,

My main thought is that is still going to be something on the Apple iMessage Server end.

However at this stage I have no way of confirming that.

Have you tried a different Mac User Account (with the same Apple ID) ?

This might point to an issue with the .plists Messages uses.  (i.e a Local issue)

I created a new user account, and entered my AppleID when prompted in Messages, but had the same error about verifying the AppleID.

Try booting in Safe Mode then restarting the computer again normally.

No luck with booting into safe mode.  I'm also finding it odd that I can no longer use my AppleID on any of my macs with Facetime (10.7 or 10.8)

    HI,

I have an @mac.com name I use in iChat and Messages as an AIM Screen Name.

IF I remove my current ID (Use the Account Details button and then Sign Out  Button and enter new Into) I then get the message that there was an error and it "failed the verify"

If I then use the "Remove Email" option button it goes back to the "account" screen with the spinning cogwheel still going.
The only way to stop that is to use the Account Details button and Sign Out button inside.
I have done s brief search for mac.com and iMessage and I am not seeing any Apple Documents show up  (not in Google searches or a search on Apple)
I tried with a second @mac.com name that I had just checked the password on the Apple ID site.  (in fact I changed it)

When I get these failed accounts It reads that I am in the United States and trying to set this to the United Kingdom does not seem to work.
Adding an Address to the Info on the My Info Apple ID site did not seem to help either (Although it does register the fact the account is a UK one).
I am now at a loss as to what to do next.
This Messages seems like it would be helpful in that it appears to offer a Link
However there seems no other option about how to contact Support.
Little Snitch tells me that a "normal" login contacts three servers at the iMesssage end and the failed ones only make it though the first.

This means I can recreate this but also find the "Standard" Fixes do not seem to work.

    EDIT

However I would also look at this thread as the person who go the points had posted they contacted Apple Support directly and got it booted up the chain to a Senior rep.
