Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Safari and iTunes don't work together

Well, here is the problem. It seems that Safari doesn't support iTunes running at the same time, it makes the computer lagging during several seconds. Plus, sometimes is really slow even on his own. My question is: Why?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.

Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.

Step 1

Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:

Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.

Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.

Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.

Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.

Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?

Step 2

You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.

Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.

Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

Hi thanks for trying to help me. So, I have to say that I'm french so the terms are not exactly the same, I mean not litteraly translated. Thus, I'll give you every memory usage. These figures come from a screenshot I took when they were high and from an observation I made during one or two minutes.

For the % CPU, those stuffs are running like squirrels, never stay still, but the biggest ones are the "Safari Web Content" up to 9,6 % (± 100 Mo), iTunes 2,7 % (± 155 Mo), Safari 1,8 % (± 89 Mo), and a certain kernel_task from the root user, 4,5 % (± 374 Mo). The figures just get higher and higher and then the music stops, can't do anything except moving the cursor, just before they sink, to resume an ascension once again.

For the memory the stats are:

- "Free" (green) 1,66 Go

- "Resident" (red) ± 735 Mo

- "Active" (yellow) 1,21 Go

- "Inactive" (blue) 408 Mo

- "Used" (no color) 2,33 Go

Enjoy: (Bouygues Telecom is an "internet provider")

I would ordinarily recommend testing in safe mode, but you can't do that because your Internet connection won't work. You're using some kind of USB device for access, which is a very undesirable choice. I suspect that the software it needs is causing the problem. Go to a public Wi-Fi hotspot, boot in safe mode (shift key held down at startup) and see whether there's any difference.

Jul 28, 2012 1:31 AM in response to Linc Davis

No, I'm sorry, it's not because of my USB 3G key, I had installed the software for a while when they began to crash for no obvious reason. Plus, I can't go to a personnal wi-fi or any public hotspot before some days (I work as a lookout for all july and august, that means staying in the point lookout 24/7). Maybe it's because of the updates I don't know, because I downloaded Chrome and it works well with any other software. i think the problem comes from Safari which I can't reinstall.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.
  2. Press the power button.
  3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
  4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. You won't have Internet access, but you can launch Safari and test iTunes. Same problem(s)?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
