smb shares on servers inaccessible after mountain lion upgrade?

From my mini, I access some windows servers for data storage, mapping SMB. For some reason, after upgrading to Mountain Lion, I can't get to those drives (shares) any longer.

They are accessible from other computers on the network, and they are even accessible from a virtual Win7 (Fusion) session on the mini. But in the main OS X mountain lion environment on the mini, they are not accessible through any of the usual means (Finder, etc).

I even installed ForkLift and ForkLift can't get to them either.

If I go to GO -> Connect to Server, I get "There was a problem connecting to the server "192.192.192.192". (Not the real IP.)

If I use the existing entry in the list of shares I get "Connection Failed".

Needless to say, noting on the server has changed, and Mountain Lion left the shortcuts/share names/startup connection commands (which used to open the server drives when the mini started up) in tact. But actually connecting and using docs on the server, no dice.

What am I missing?

I'm having a similar problem after the upgrade to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. I used to be able to access the shares on my windows home server via "finder" or Go Connect to server (SMB://ip_address/share) but when I put in the valid name and password for the windows home server - no joy; all I get is the login prompt "shakes" itself... I know the username and password are valid as I can establish a remote desktop connection and I can also access the home server's https interface using the same account/username???

What gives MAC?

I also seem to be having the same "/" issue.

If I connect to smb://server/ it will not connect.

If I connect to smb://server/share/ it works.

Once connected to a share, if I click on the server in the 'Shared' section of the Finder sidebar I get a single folder named '/'

I double checked what happened using Lion on my old MBP running Lion today and it worked fine, so I know that this not a problem with our Windows Server.

Hope this gets fixed as this is something we use to view all available shares on a server.

I'm having the same issue many are reporting upthread:

If I connect to smb://server/ it will not connect -- I get an error message when trying to connect over a VPN, and when I'm on the network I see "/" in the finder. Before the ML upgrade (running Lion) I used to get a list of shares.

If I connect to smb://server/share it works fine.

This isn't a big deal for me since there are only two shares on my network I ever use and its easy enough to connect to them directly. But it's still annoying (and was extremely irksome until I figured out the workaround).

It might be the exact same thing we're experiencing on two of our Macbook Pro's (bought in spring 2010 - and only those... Strange!?!). We have found a workaround to the stalling login-process (NetAuthAgent):

In the login popup try to click the "change password" button and then enter your password as both "old" and "new" (+confirm new offcourse). Then it should logs on instantly.

Please let me/us know if it works and provide model info about your affected Mac's.

PS - the "simple" solution with adding share names doesn't work for us.

For me, I finally broke down and renamed my network computer (a Win7 machine) with my shared drives (three) -- to a 3 letter name (both the machine itself, and the three drives in it I want to share) ..... and that worked! Annoying, but now the machine shows up under SHARED in the Finder, and I can browse to the three shared drives.

I find it very hard to believe that Apple doesn't have this use case as one of their primary, automated test scrips, that they run on even the smallest OS patch, let alone a major annual release, before the software goes public.

Maybe these knew/know about this bug, and decided it wasn't worth delaying Mountain Lion in order to fix it?

It seems like such an easy fix. I have been looking everywhere for a preference or plist to increase the size of data accepted from the SMB server and I have been unable to locate it. I have also been checking the developer downloads section for any new updates available that fix this issue, but I have not seen any. Hopefully they can get it resolved soon.

I've contacted Mac support about this and they're working the issue. They've passed it up the engineering chain and I think they recognize there is a valid problem. We did some log capures and I've sent them back - I should here back from then in about four days or so (what they said).

Here's the email reply after our phone session:
