smb shares on servers inaccessible after mountain lion upgrade?

Something I have discovered. I have two machines 1 of which I upgraded to Mountain Lion from the App Store download, the 2nd machine I did a clean installation via a bootable USB Drive.

The machine I did a clean install on still works as Lion worked the machine that I upgraded I was only able to make it work by using the IP Address of the server not the name of the server.

Just an observation...

This is inexcusable. And it has been broken for more than a week! This is destroying people who rely on OSX for a living.

When is Apple going to fix this?

Who approved this roll out?

Two Win 7 computers on a home office LAN and different behaviors with file sharing on a MacBook Pro Retina ungraded to Mt. Lion. I can connect with smb://wife and it is stable. Almost nothing works with smb://me except sometimes smb://me/photos works. Then it doesn't. Both worked before the upgrade.

I have almost exactly the same folders on both because I just swapped them between my wife and I and both computers have all of the files for now. I can work with the MBP files through Windows Explorer on //me so although awkward at times I'm fully operational. Still, techies can't sleep at night with such an issue :-)

as mentioned before, I did not have any problems with smb//ip or smb//name. I did an upgrade via appstore too.

BUT I got a permanent issue accessing my shares via wifi!

Regarding my comment above I should mention that my MBP is on an Airport Extreme WiFi LAN. Both Win 7 computers are on Ethernet with this router. The one that works is a aging Dell and the one that doesn't is a powerful newer HP, although that shouldn't matter. (Both will be replaced with Macs someday.)

I have just heard that update 12B13 (10.8.1 beta) was released to developers on 8-Aug and addresses many issues, including SMB. There is no schedule for this release, but I expect we might see it within 2 weeks or less. Let's hope they get SMB right this time.

FYI, pre-release notes for 10.8.1 mention that SMB is a "focus area". Let's hope this bad boy works.

I tried SMBUp. Didn't work for me.

Had the same issues with 10.8. Installed 10.8.1 (Beta) today and fortunately its working again 🙂

How did you get it back after the upgrade? Ive been trying to get it back, but no luck. Any help is appreciated.

No need to do anything - except restarting. Now I can connect to any smd shares on the same server in the exact same manner as on 10.7.

workaround: smb://ipaddress/sharename, problem seems to be with longer names. Hope it will be fixed soon.....

I change the name of my windows server; then used that name to re-connect my SMB shares and it worked.....
