I was able to fix with the classic delete everything and restart manouvre

- deleted the backup folder off the drive

- empty trash

- restart

- bingo

I didn't have to turn off spotlight indexing or anything.

As a professional computer repair technician of over 10yrs, you would be suprised how many issues can be solved with this method...

Been there, done that. Didn't fix it. Wish it did! When the Apple guy called, we did the same routine.

For some of us the backups had been working great for a long while, and then stopped.

Another data point:

Client with three new iMacs, migrated from white 17" iMacs, networked via Gigabit Ethernet switch. Pair of new WD 4TB USB attached to one machine, all three use for backup. Machine to which drive is attached backs up fine, networked machines bog slow. Change IP address from DHCP to static on networked iMac, and backup speed shoots from averaging under 100KB/sec to over 10MB/sec.

I am having the same issue. I had a backup stalled at 23 GB out of 25 GB. I stopped the backup and restarted.Currently it is in the state of "Preparing Backup:.. Time Machine backups have been very slow since I purchased my new iMac in late December 2012.

Processor 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 with 24 GB of RAM.

External Seagate 3TB Drive - USB3

Will check in later... to see if the backup completes.

There seems to be a major issue with Time Machine.

It seems to me this problem is related to the indexing for Spotlight. I had to backup (Time Machine) 386 Gb on a new, clean HD (USB 3.0). Time Maschine estimated around 20 days. In the system-log files I found these rows after starting the backup:

mdworker: Unable to talk to lsboxd
sandboxd: ([xxxxx]) mdworker(xxxxx) deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd

So, I opened Spotlight in the System Preference Panel and added the Time Maschine-Drive to the Private Sphere to prevent indexing for Spotlight. After restarting the Time Maschine Backup the estimation time shrinked to 6 hours.

I hope to help you with that.

Got the entries in both, my MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2007, 2.4GHz) and my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010).

But only the MBP have this problems…
