Macbook Pro screen becomes blue every time a discrete graphics card is used!

The screen color of my 2011 17" Macbook Pro changes to blue-ish every time the discrete graphics card is used! That started to happen only after I upgraded to OS Mountain Lion!

Whenever I open any app that use Discrete graphics card by default, the screen becomes blue and looks terrible.. Applications include, VLC, Chrome (20.0) and I guess quite a few others!

So now efectively my Macbook Pro has just one usable video-card - the buit in one, because the discrete card (AMD Radeon HD 6750M) is not usable!

Here's some other forums set up about this problem, so it's not just me:

I have had this problem even though I did not have automatic login turned on. (It happened when I started Photoshop CS4.) I did find, though, that if I log off after ML (Mountain Lion) has loaded, and re-login, the problem is fixed. Definitely a better fix than gfxCardStatus! Thanks for the heads up!

By the way, I am running a standard drive, not an SSD, so I don't believe that the problem is related to the SSD.

I'm having the same problem that started after I upgraded to Mountain Lion. (I have the Early 2011 MBP). I noticed the screen having a blue tint whenever I used graphics intensive programs like running videos or using skype. As I recall it happened after I upgraded to Mountain Lion to 10.8.1. Logging out and then logging back in did not change the tint. If I set the graphics card to integrated only with gfxCardStatus- the color is normal, but when I change it to discreet only, the blue tint is back. It sounds like a software issue. Waiting for the next OS update/patch.

Then it broke during the download. Try re-downloading it. Also, do the following:

Open the Terminal and Finder. Write "shasum " (note the space) in the Terminal and drag'n'drop the file from the Finder into the Terminal. Press enter. The output in the Terminal should contain the string 883ab7dcd5dbe6add522e382349b08869ef19dbf. If it doesn't, it's (still) broken.

Paul8, not sure where the problem was with the download, as I had the same error with Chrome and Safari. Anyway downloaded using another Mac and transferred using USB

Installed the update and restarted, and lo and behold, it's (so far) fixed the blue tint issue. So far I've tried the apps that triggered the tint, and did the same steps after reinstall and all seems well!!

You're a star, thank you so much!

2 questions:

1. how the **** did you find out about this fix?

2. is there an easy way to make sure the graphics cards are switching, and not just stuck in the integrated mode?

Thanks

1. Developer intuition. 😉

2. Yup, indeed. Programs > Utilities > System Information. After its window opens (might take a while) go to Hardware > Graphics/Displays. Now you can check whether your screen is "attached" to the Intel HD chip or the graphic card (GeForce GT 330M).

To check whether it's working properly do the following: Close everything. Open the System Information and check for the integrated chip. Open iPhoto/Chrome/etc and check again (be sure to either close and re-open the System Information or to press R before checking again).
