Macbook Pro screen becomes blue every time a discrete graphics card is used!

The screen color of my 2011 17" Macbook Pro changes to blue-ish every time the discrete graphics card is used! That started to happen only after I upgraded to OS Mountain Lion!

Whenever I open any app that use Discrete graphics card by default, the screen becomes blue and looks terrible.. Applications include, VLC, Chrome (20.0) and I guess quite a few others!

So now efectively my Macbook Pro has just one usable video-card - the buit in one, because the discrete card (AMD Radeon HD 6750M) is not usable!

Here's some other forums set up about this problem, so it's not just me:

never had file fault enabled, but had blue screen problem,

so its not referring to file vault. its not referring to any software as someone else confirmed.

my only and simple solution is the same as stated above in another comment:

turned on user login in system settings (login with account and pass) and i never had this blue screen

problem anymore from the day on i turned it on

. its gone for 100%.

Yeah, the problem came back for me as well. I heard in some podcast, that it only occurs with non-Apple SSDs because the system dosen't adjust some delays during boot to wait for tasks to run and your ssd is essentially to fast for the configuration of the system. I have no idea if that is the reason but they suggested a logout and login to fix the problem until the next boot.

I hope Apple solves this, it's really annoying.

Disable automatic switching, logout, login and enable it again...that works for me...until the next reboot. Thank god i'm not running Windows, so it at least lasts for a while 😉

Nope, ain't working...

I have to disable it then do a full reboot. After the reboot i enable it and everything is fine. I just have to remember to disable it again before I shut down my mac. A bit of a pain but usually I don't shut it down for weeks and just let it go to sleep...

Try that with windows 😉

i just started having this problem. i think it's some file dealing with graphics/color that is getting corrupt. this just started after hard booting my mbp. i've got an ssd but no file vault enabled and i'm on 10.8.4.

if updating solved the problem it's possible that the update cleaned up whatever file was corrupt and same with disabling graphics switching. it could be corrupt cache? i'll try some stuff and report back if i find anything.

I'm starting to have this problem also.

I bought my Macbook Pro in 2011, with a stock SSD installed. Later that year I took out my stock SSD and put in an OCZ VERTEX 3. I never had any issues until a couple of days ago and I used my Macbook at home, on my TV and at the office with an external monitor. A couple of days ago I did a Apple Hardware Test just for the sake of it and it found an error with the SSD. I repaired the permissions on my SSD and after that I started having the issue.

This is the only thing I did - the Apple Hardware Test followed by repairing permisions for the first time since I bought my Macbook Pro. I guess this is why I started having this problem. 😟

This problem just showed up for me last week. I recently installed an SSD, but the blue screen issue didn't show up until a few days after it was installed (or at least, I didn't notice until then). I also have FileVault 2 enabled. I do not have Aperture or even Adobe Flash installed.

I'm heartened to know this doesn't appear to be a GPU issue, but find myself increasingly disillusioned with all the problems I've encountered since switching to a Mac. I spent way too much money on this computer, and have put in too many upgrades, to have these silly issues keep cropping up. My ThinkPad A31 from college still runs without issues, and the thing is over ten years old and has survived countless beer/wine spills. Where is this vaunted Apple quality I kept hearing about before switching?

My machine stats (to help diagnose):

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro (15 inches)
  • 16GB RAM
  • Crucial m500 SSD, 480GB
  • OSX 10.8.4

Sincerely,

A customer questioning why he bought a Mac

Unfortunately, if the theory that using a non-Apple SSD in conjunction with Filevault 2 results in the blue tint , I fear that we will not get a solution from Apple. History shows that they are not at all an open company by any stretch. They do not allow one to control their own device at a level they (Apple) have deemed unacceptable. Simply look at the consistent approach to marginalize Jail Breaking of iPhones. Why not just charge the price of a new iPhone to repair one that has been bricked and let people do what they want with the device that they purchased??? Enough rant...

Basically, they have no reason to resolve this issue when they went out of their way to make sure that the TRIM function only works with genuine Apple SSD's. They want to sell more Apple SSD's and they only want Genius Bar folks to install them.

Example:

I just purchased a 2012 MacBook Air for my wife and we had it all of 17 days and the SSD died. It was 15 days out of Apple warranty and when I called the local Apple store I was told that they would not sell me the bare OEM drive. They had to install it. What? It has no warranty and I cannot even purchase and install the OEM drive myself? The price - $759.00 for a 128GB drive. The alternative they gave me - trade the Air in on a new one.

I will say that when I called Apple support line and spoke to a supervisor, they agreed to cover the repair 100% as it was only 15 days past the warranty end. Quite frankly, this is why we still have the Apple products in our house.

Don't hold your breath that this will be resolved in any patch or any future release of OSX. I'll wager that it will not.
