Macbook Pro screen becomes blue every time a discrete graphics card is used!

The screen color of my 2011 17" Macbook Pro changes to blue-ish every time the discrete graphics card is used! That started to happen only after I upgraded to OS Mountain Lion!

Whenever I open any app that use Discrete graphics card by default, the screen becomes blue and looks terrible.. Applications include, VLC, Chrome (20.0) and I guess quite a few others!

So now efectively my Macbook Pro has just one usable video-card - the buit in one, because the discrete card (AMD Radeon HD 6750M) is not usable!

Here's some other forums set up about this problem, so it's not just me:

I have exaclty the same issue. Whenever I start VLC or some other app that provokes the switch to the dedicated graphics, the internal display turns blue.

Needless to say this also happens when I plug in an external display. In this case the external display looks just fine, again the internal one is blue, though.

Looks to me like something is going wrong with the color management.

Well, not such a good new after all guys.. at least for me.. After the update this appeared to be fixed for a while, however I just restarted my Macbook and the old problem has returned! 😟 The screen again becomes blue as soon as the computer switches to discrete video card!

I've got a 2010 MBP with intel SSD, and I've been having this problem ever since upgrading to ML. The recent update to 10.8.1 didn't seem to work either. One thing I havent had a chance to check with 8.1 is that if the blue tint appears when connected to power. On battery mode it definetly does appear, but need to check when plugged in.

Also, I think it happens because the MBP with the SSD is so fast on bootup that ML doesnt have time to fully load the colour profile?

I've found a workaround that works all the time without fail.

  1. Once ML is loaded simply log off and then log back in. - This is what I do and it works everytime - no more blue tint
  2. System Prefs > Users & Groups > Login Options > Automatic Login = OFF. - This will then prompt you to enter your password when starting up, therefoe slowing down the ML load process, which in turn loads the colour profile. I don't like this method as I usually have automatic login, so I usually just log off and on again (1).

My problem just disappeared - can't recall if I was running Lion or Mountain Lion at the time. I do use gfxCardStatus and just set my card to discrete only and it worked - then one day I set it to dynamic and the problem was gone. It does seem to be a software glitch - but one that was mysteriously 'fixed' for me.

Now, even on battery or adapter, I can dynamically switch with no blue tint. I don't know why, though, nor why some more users are having the problem.
