What is occurring is your Mac is attempting to repair the drive while booting, this means it found something seriously wrong, this is why you see the progress bar at boot time.

Sometime it will work and your fine.

Sometimes it not that, but a firmware update that's not installing.

If you recently did a Software Update and it's doing that, it could be the firmware update not applying, which means a softwre update problem or a problem with your chips holding the firmware, which means a logicboard replacement in some cases, else you might have interupted the update, but can apply it manually.

Else it's a serious problem with the boot drive.

Your going to have to evaluate your current backup, if you have your backups of your personal files then your good, else your going to have to perform this to try to recover your files off the boot drive.

Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive

If your backups are safely off the boot drive, next your going to try to fix your drive, run through the list of repair fixes here

Step by Step to fix your Mac

If it still occurs, then it could be a hard drive issue or the firmware, if it's the firmware, I have a method to install it again from disk and download if your sure that's the problem.
