No sound with mirroring

I have a brand new 2012 Macbook Air and cannot get the sound to work either. It will not let me select the Apple TV under the sound options. It shows it is there, but won't change to it.

Hi. Sound and picture are working through AirPlay for me. It actaully surprised me so I took note of it before seeing your post. Sound reverts to Mac when I stop AirPlay and starts again through my TV when I switch back to AirPlay.

Suggestion: is your AppleTV software up to date?

(using a mid 2011 MBP 15)

I actually just had the same issue as you were having. No sound when mirroring. And I wasn't able to select Apple TV as the output devise either. However, after a simple reboot, the issue was resolved and the sound now works. Hope that helps.

Same issue on my iMac. Everything is supported and updated to latest firmware but I can only transfer video and no audio. I can see "Apple TV - AirPlay" in list of sound output but I can't click it. Well, I can but it immediatelly jumps back to internal speakers. I will try reboot and see if it helps somehow...

Another observation: with mirroring "on" ...

- sound comes from my TV with some applications and through the MBP internal speakers with others

- Internal: facetime, sound system preference, for example

- TV: from Safari: try any YouTube video

I am also having trouble as described above but rebooting my Mac Air (2011) hasnt solved anything and both my mac and apple tv are up to date.

Airplay mirroring works fine with Youtube and web based videos but when watching films using VLC from my mac via external hardrive I see only picture with sound playing from my internal speakers.

After about 10 mins of playing around with vairous settings i can sometime get sound out of the tv but this is not a given and even then sometimes i get sound but no picture.

Another annoying thing is that when mirroring if I maximise the video screen the Dock still remains infront of the picture. It is only when u come out of mirroirng and re-maximise that it is covered up (as per norm).

Any help would be appreciated

When mirroring, are you able to select your Apple TV as the sound output device? Try holding "option" then click the little sound icon on the menu bar. Select Apple TV on the drop down menu. For me, I was able to select this after I rebooted. Hope that helps.

I've got a Late 2011 13" MBP and the airplay works with sound fresh rebooted but if I try again later when the MBP have been awaken from sleep etc.. The audio dont go over...

When I try to select the AppleTV as the sound device it will not stay selected. Hopefully this will be fixed with an update from Apple soon..

Its working now which is highly unsual - to get to the sound options i have to go into: system preferences - sound and then i can see apple Tv and airplay. Althought I could see that yeserday and it didnt work.

Lets hope it stays fixed.

Any ideas for the dock?

When i apply airplay mirroring playing a video in VLC and maximise the video on my tv (with match desktop size set as apple tv) the dock appears over the video.

new imac, sometimes the sound follows the picture to apple TV, sometimes it stays on mac... its not program dependend, but rather random... though I NEVER could get VLC to play sound over airplay mirroring

For any having trouble with audio while airplay mirroring in Mountain Lion I think I've figured out the issue:

Whenever I'm NOT on the home screen on my Apple TV (2), say inside another app (Youtube, Netflix or Computers) the video will work fine but I will not get audio. Once you try to Airplay and don't get audio you wont be able to get it unless you put your Apple TV into SLEEP mode and wake it up and get back to the HOME screen. THEN use Airplay. I'm pretty sure this is a bug either in Mountain Lion or with the Apple TV. Either way hopefully Apple fixes it.

SOLUTION!

In the terminal, enter:

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

This isn't ideal, but it works. Flushing out the cache seems to remove whatever is causing the issue.

It will restore your sound output in the preferences to be able to use airplay WITHOUT restarting.
