Jul 27, 2012 8:39 AM in response to olgphotoby Limnos,A 2006 computer is 6 years old and considered vintage, if not almost obsolete, by Apple.
Vintage and obsolete products - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1752
Actually Apple does not look like Microsoft. I still receive updates for my 8 year old version of MS Office. You do not receive any updates for Apple software older than about 4 years.

Jul 27, 2012 9:27 AM in response to olgphotoby Monty1945,Greetings,
The EFI is not why a 2006 MACPro cannot run ML, the thing is almost an antique, when you consider how fast things move in the tech world.
No one says that you have to update to ML - I still have a G4 running plain old Leopard, and it works for me for what I need it for. I have several Macs (7) of all ages, and only three of them can run ML, but only two of them ever will, until I buy a new one.
If ML is that important to you, then it's time to upgrade - normal upgrade paths for over 90% of us is three, to four years, max, to keep up with the latest and greatest. Its Ok to keep th eolder machines for th eusual run of the mill activities, like email, surfing the web, playing music, the odd video, etc.
Cheers,
M.

Jul 27, 2012 9:37 AM in response to olgphotoby bwulfe,MacPro (Early 2008) is the oldest Pro that will support Mountain Lion. 2006 version has a 32 Bit Processor. Mountain Lion requires 64 Bit. As someone else stated earlier; in terms of computer hardware; you are running an antique.

Sep 29, 2012 7:10 PM in response to olgphotoby Bobdc6,Apple is selling a system, not just individual gadgets. Even older Apple products did sync with Mobilme until iCloud ended it for older Apple products, but not older Microsoft products. So when Apple shut down Mobileme, they did the equlivalent of AT&T shutting down the phone system in favor of something completely different. Now in order for Apple products to operate in the new and completely different system, all hardware must be upgraded to at least Lion capable. If one has several older Apple gadgets, then it can cost thousands of dollars to upgrade to the new system if the ability to sync between gadgets is important to the user. There's nothing wrong with Apple moving forward with new and better technology, but they have no right to terminate the original capabilities of the equipment purchased in good faith by their loyal customers. Apple had enough money to have kept MobileMe going for years.
