Javascript bugs in Safari 6 on Mountain Lion

Since I've upgraded to Safari 6 on Mountain Lion I'm having several problems that seem to be javascript-related. On many sites, for no apparent reason, interface elements will stop receiving click events. For example, checkboxes and buttons don't respond when clicked. Links don't respond if they have a "click" handler but they will work if they are plain links with an href. If I try to reload the page it stalls, as if the server is not responding. I have to relaunch safari in order for the site to load and it will inevitably happen again... just not sure when.

Other points:

1. I've seen this problem on several different sites across many domains, it's not limited to a particular site.

2. There are no javascript errors (that I can attribute to this problem) and javascript is enabled (of course).

3. For all the sites that I've experienced this problem I've loaded the same site in chrome with no problems.

4. Safari was my default browser before the upgrade and I've never experienced this problem before.

5. The only extension I have is 1Password. I tried disabling it but it hasn't improved the problem.

I'm hoping that someone else is esperiencing this problem and either has a fix or can help me get Apple's attention so they will issue a fix.

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm developping a web site using HTML5 video tag and a Javascript inserted contact form.

Every thing runs fine with FireFox, Opera, Chrome and IE 9, but the page slows down with Safari 6.0.1 (Mac) Safari 5.1.7 (PC) but works well with Safari 5.1.2 (Mac).

As soon as the mp4 source is removed (and Safari got nothing to play) the page's back to a normal behaviour.

I even tried to remove every attribute from the video tag, deactivate unnecessary scripts, rewrote all scripts in OOP with no result.

On Safari 6.0.2, same problems across the board, though slightly less, but not enough to switch away from Chrome. It's a shame too, because Safari scrolls much smoother than Chrome on my rMBP, but I can't handle improper loading of the most popular websites, stuttering gifs, etc. Apple is failing all over the place these days. Back off of Samsung and fix Safari already.

I'm curious what kind of computers you guys have. I'm using a Macbook Pro Retina 15" with the most updated versions of ML and Safari. When I use Safari, I get the following problems constantly:

  • Going back to the previous page yields a white screen half of the time
  • Trying to load an embedded document (such as a PDF or Word document through my school's Blackboard system) yields a blank page
  • GIF images load terribly (stutter constantly), or do not load at all
  • Websites like Amazon, Facebook and GMail (and many more) have huge blocks of missing content, and if I roll my mouse over the missing content, some of it shows up (buttons and such)

I can literally trigger one or more of the previous problems by using Safari for 1-2 minutes, which prompts me to want to throw my computer through the window. This isn't a minor problem; this is the most glaring bug-ridden software I've ever used in my 20 years of computing. That's why I'm curious if this is happening on non-Retina models... Either they literally didn't QC their Retina line, or they literally have not QC'ed Safari on any of their products. Which one is it, Apple?

The problem is not likely the computer itself. And after 20 years of computing too, I can assure you the solution is probably very simple. I have the same MB Pro Retina 15" and Safari is now working fine for me. In fact, I had several other Mountain Lion bugs that are now fixed. Unfortunately, I can't tell you pricely what my solution was because I did a number of different things at the same time.

If you are not having other Mac problems, then you can assume the problem is only with this one app. In addition to ensuring you have the latest version, check your preferences in Safari. Ensure that in Safari preferences, you check everything including enable Java and JavaScript (I block pop-up windows).

If you haven't already done so, call Apple Support. If they can't solve the problem, request to advance the problem to Level Two support. They can walk you through identifiying potentially corrupt apps.

Try resetting the PRAM.

Try a clean install of the OSX.

Avoid using Migration Assistant — which may tranfer some 3rd party app that you might conflict.

Do not install all apps at the same time; install them after using Safari — one by one (and frequent reboots) to islolate any app conflict. For example, I discovered that Transmit menu caused a Mountain Lion conflict.

If you've done all of the above and still want to toss your MBP Retina ... give it to me! 🙂
