Q: Help with iMessage with MacBook Pro, iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

Hi all, needing some help please.

I send an iMessage using my MacBook Pro, I receive a reply on my iPad 2 but nothing appears on my iPhone 4S.

Why is this?

Yeah I'm in the same boat, iMessage seems to be having issues between eMail addresses and telephone numbers being associated to Apple I.Ds.

A friends iPhone has iMessage switched on but my iPhone doesn't recognise it as an iMessage device, yet my mother's and brother's iPhones show up fine as iMessage devices.

I've tried reseting all devices, clearing messages etc with absolutely no change.

    Hi,

In the iOS devices go to Settings > Messages > Received At > Caller ID

Are you sure this is the same Apple ID spelt the same way as used in Messages ?

Were all old Messages cleared from the iOS devices ?

iMessages can't be synced if they were sent before the Apple ID was linked to an iPhone Phone Number (it can't grab all your history as it were).

The Syncing will only be from the time this was set up.

iMessages from the Apple ID on Messages on the Mac to the iPhone Number should sync across all devices.
Message from the iPhone number will not be a function until iOS 6 is released.

    Ralph,

Is it just that the messages cannot be synced retroactively, or that they also prevent new messages from being synced. I would hate to lose some of my old messages if avoidable.

    See this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4147918?tstart=0

It isn't possible to sync older messages, but you will not lose any messages.

    Hi,

It will not retroactively sync what is on your iPhone already.

If you don't clear them it will not sync "Currently" either.

Old Messages can be selected Line by Line (message by message) as it were via Edit and then Forwarded "en masse" to your Apple ID.

This looses formatting as to the different parts of the conversation but you will have all the details.

Some people are saying that Shutting down the Phone and restarting it does the same thing with losing the messages you have.

I have not tried this and if true would point to a break with the server being more important.

Old messages interfering with syncing new messages has to be a bug rather than a design choice. Whichever, it is most unfortunate.

in the iPad you are using as acount one ore more e-mail acounts, for example:  test@me.com !

in the iPhone 4 or 4S you can use a TELEPHONE acount! for example:   +1 987654321

and !!! you can use one ore more e-mail acounts, for example:   test@me.com

in the mac you are using as acount one ore more e-mail accounts, for example:   test@me.com

So, very important is, that on ALL devices is the same MAIN acount activated!!!

    For example:   ipad: test@hotmail.com / mac: test@me.com / iphone 4(s) test@me.com

Your e-mails must be registerd in the appl store, your main acount for example.

iCloud must be con mail activated!!!!

After this doing, sending a imessage from each device apears instantly in the other devices!!

Anathor very IMPORTANT detaill: in the apple store, in your acount you must enter the correct tel. nummber.

Don´t forgett the country code...  +1...+41...or so.

Then you can use the tel. acount on your iphone 4(s) also by this way!!

    Good look!

    Your examples won't work.

If a Message is sent to a phone number, on an iPhone, that message will only show up on that iPhone. The Message will not show up on the other devices. Similarly, if different iCloud accounts are used the Messages also won't be in sync.

For this to work all the devices must be associated wtih the SAME iCloud account (for example myemail@me.com), and the Messages must be sent to the email address. Sending to a phone number will only send the Message to the iPhone and no other devices.

    Hi,

I agree with the method you state in the link from the post of the 28th.

From posting in Messages beta from some months it has seemed a required step to delete the old messages.

    Hi,

There are reports that people have read on the Apple Site that it will be a function that comes when iSO 6 is released.

    HI,

It just has to be an Apple ID

It does not have to be the iCloud one.  (It does help to have an iCloud account to sync Contact Information and the like)

Yes it does need the same ID to be used across the devices and computers your want to use.
