I cannot sign in to iMessage. All I get when I try is "Could not sign in to iMessage. Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again." but my network connection is obviously working (since I could post this message).Screen Shot 2012-07-27 at 9.38.57 AM.png

    Hi,

The evidence is stacking up that this is an issue at the iMessages servers.

Many people are reporting that they can't sign in.

The Messages part of  "Mountain Lion Community" has gone from just 21 threads on Wednesday to 184 as the time I type.

As the more people download Mountain Lion the worse the issue seems to be getting.

Earlier On I could Message my son's iPhone but a reply he sent me has not arrived (yet) despite his phone saying it was DELIVERED.

I am unable to use iMessage at all. I get a warning "Failed to verify email - Unable to verify <email> because it is already in use by another Apple ID"

It is also an endless loop - I have to Force Quit "Message" to exit the program.

    This is a joke

    Hi,

Some people are reporting that starting the Computer in Safe Mode and then restating normally seem to sort this.

I think my problem is that my old AIM account used my .mac ( then .me) email address. Somehow iMessage treats this as the email being in use "by another Apple ID"

I will look at closing my AIM account, since I only used it for the now defunct iChat. Not sure how easy it is to close - hopefully not impossible, like iCloud.

    HI,

Messages does iMesages to iOS devices using the Apple ID and it can do everything that iChat Did.

It uses the same iChat engine to do most things.

You could regard it as iChat +

In the case of Apple IDs ending in @mac.com and @me.com they are also valid AIM names and can be used in Messages as such  (This does need to the name to be listed in two places in the Accounts List)

IF you had a Paid for @mac.com account and linked that to a Paid For MobileMe @me.com name then you have two Valid AIM names.

You may in fact have 3 if the iCloud @me.com name is different again.

However the MobileMe one will no longer work as that serviced has fully closed.

Some people reported issues about the way they "Transferred" to iCloud and closed their MobileMe account having called the iCloud Account by the same name.

iCloud Issued IDs will not work in earlier version of iChat (5 or less) due to a dual login iChat 6 and Messages do to me.com that lets AIM "see" the password.

I have not had problem using my old Apple ID name which is in fact my iCloud name now (although I used an external to Apple email) or the @me.com name as the iMessages ID.

I do have the @me.com name listed as an AIM valid Screen Name with a Buddy List.

Here is the error message that I get. I am actually used a different AIM ID for iChat - I dont think that was my problem (It seems to wiork in Messages). The problem is when I try to set up Messages for my .me account.

    message_login_error.jpg

I have tried setting it to my .mac email instead of .me. It accepts that password login and says it is sending a verification email but nothing arrives (inbox/junk/trash). My .mac address still works for receiving other email.

So maybe I am having the iCloud issues that you referred to.

    Hi,

I am now getting something like this myself

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19099217#19099217

If I use an @mac.com name (And I have tried two that I have) then I get a message that there is something wrong with the name  (but not the same as your message)

I have been to the Apple ID site and logged in with that @mac.com ID and verified the password by that login and Added an Address in one case as the box kept saying United States

That bit was solved so I know it can access the @mac.com servers.

I can find no info that it has to be an iCloud ID.

In this Thread the poster says they contacted Apple Care and then got moved up twice to a Senior rep

who solved it  (Later in the Thread they get awarded the Solved/Correct points)

Of course the issue with this is that Apple Care may have run out for some.

Thanks Ralph. I just found out I have somehow ended up with two Apple IDs: one is just a username xxxx and the other is that username with a mac extension - xxxx@mac.com. They effectively have the same email xxx@me.com and that is evidently causing the problem with Messages.

I have changed the primary email address of the xxxx@mac.com ID to a non-Apple one and will see if this fixes Messages.

There is no way for a user to delete an Apple ID so I have booked a support call. I will refer to your discovery of the separate discussion.

  • Michael Paine Level 2 Level 2 (330 points)

OK - that has worked. I used my xxxx Apple ID for the Message account and xxxx@me.com as the account email. This time the system was able to verify the email address.

I will now try (via Apple Support) to get rid of the unwanted Apple ID to prevent future mix-ups.

    HI,

They tend not to delete Accounts/Names

    1)  It has the potential for other people to pretend to be you.

    2) It would allow people to go mad and create posting names here and abuse the points system  (or at least "game" it)

I tend to have several Apple IDs, mostly for checking iChat/Messages but in this case I tested two with iMessages

I was debating to make one of them an iCloud account as well and see if this made a difference.

    Okay,

let me add my story to this thread.

Brand spanking MBA, Mountain Lion.......logged into Imessage 1st thing, no prob.

Then, after a few weeks; in the middle of a chat....the name of the other person turned red and my sent messages received a red dot as they were not sent. I checked with the other person.

I couldn`t recieive any messages either, not from any contact.

I logged out, and I couldn`t log in anymore.

I get a yellow triangle saying something like "error while logging in, try again later".

I tried again and again later........

I seeked help on this forum and a user helped me initially.

I re-installed the whole Mountain Lion, a process that I don`t care to repeat too often.

That fixed it for a while, but yesterday the same thing happened.

In the middle of a chat....the red name, the red dots......well, you get the picture.

    I tried, to no avail:

    # to log in after reseting the PRAM

    # boot up and log in whilst in SAVE mode

    # to log in after deleting all Imessages and Facetime files in Library/Preferences

    # to log in with my wife`s Apple ID, or any ID really.

What did work was logging in with my ID on my wife`s Ipad, no worries.

My account is Yahoo, and don`t seem to be the problem.

    Please, any suggestions welcome.

I have urged Apple politley to give us a fix at:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/

    Thanks,

I have a new iPad. First time user. I cannot sign in to iMessages. A screen pops up telling me to check network connections. My ID is correct and wifi working so what is the problem?
