Messages and issues with Google Talk

Is anyone having issues connection to Google Talk in Messages? I know talk.google.com was down yesterday, but I am still have issues connecting. I have tried with both a gmail user account and a gapps account (both which work fine in the Google Talk Windows client).

Ther server settings appear to be correct (server talk.google.com; Port 5223 and Use SSL checked). Anyone else have issues or know what I might be doing wrong?

Hi,

It sounds like You already have Talk enabled on your Google Account.

On the Google Page does your ID end @googlemail.com or @gmail.com ?

Which of these did you use in iChat ?

It seems that in earlier version of Mail you could use either and google would allow you to Fetch the mail

In iChat and Now Messages it seems the Googletalk server is more strict.

If you have added an Account with the "wrong" suffix delete it and re-add account with the "right" suffix.

It is approaching the Opening Ceremony and I may not pick up on replies for a while

Honestly I never tried to use iChat with Google Talk in the past. My gmail account ends in @gmail.com and my gapps ends in our corporate address. But in either case on the account name I have entered the accout as username@gmail.comand username@domain.comfor my GAPPS account.

I have reverified and the Google Talk Windows client will login with both, but with the same login/password in the messages account setup it just tries to connect for a minute or so then just shows disconnected with an error message of

Messages can’t communicate with the Google Talk account “Gmail”.

Could not connect to host talk.google.com

HI,

I do know that at one time non Google mail account could also be made to work in iChat.

It tended to be with Google account that ended google.com (This was the server name as well like regular Jabber IDs)

These used port 443 as well.

This has been stopped and only Google mail accounts can have "Talk" enable AND work on external Clients.

I remember that I was convinced I 'knew' my email ID without looking it up as I had it set up in Mail as a POP account.

I had issues when I switched it to using IMAP and had to look it up and found I have the other type to the version I had in Mail.

Due to this I did actually try both ways in iChat which is why I know it does not work.

I am not familiar with a GAPPS account.

The other things I would try in Messages or iChat is to tick the "Automatically find Server and Port" and see it that gets a Login.

Interesting.

Never found that to work on a Google Account.

Appears maybe that it is an issue with the work network. From home I can connet to my Gmail Apps account in messages (as well as my normal gmail account).

They both worked from my home network with the defualt settings when configuring a Google Talk account type (using talk.google.com Port: 5223 with Use SSL checked).

I will double check on Monday that at work it still does not work to confirm that was the issue.

Thanks again everyone for the replies.

Hi TheSmokeMonster,

Yep it will work for AIM.

Jabber Account are either one or the other and rarely have a server entry point on the other port.

GoogleTalk (or talk.google.com) does allow a port 443 login but still insists on SSL

AIM have two servers and the SSL one can be a bit more Unstable that than the plain entry (non SSL) one.

AS iChat needed a manual reset of the SSL to get logged back in it was more noticible when the connection was dropped.

(you had to "Disable" the account then re"Enable" the account to make it do so)

I have long advised that people should use the NON SSL login in AIM Logins.

I must admit since iChat 6 went to the api.oscar.aol.com server things have improved.

Obviously Messages (and Beta) uses the same AIM servers.

Thanks for the points.

I will wait to hear more.

I suspect the use of Proxies at (your) work (iChat has never done well with Proxies and I suspect Messages will follow)

Hi,

If I go to Server Settings, after logging the account out of the server, (So I can change things) and use NO SSL and port 5222 and then log back in again I get this.

It's an Alert from the Keychain

If I "Continue " I get this...

Uploaded with Skitch!

Which is an Alert from Messages itself.

However at this point the Google Talk Account will login.

This is different from the last time I checked in iChat 5
