What is the real hard drive space of a Retina MacBook Pro with the 512 GB hard drive? I saw one in an Apple Store that showed only 499.42 after formatting. I understand a hard drive's space is always less after formatting, but losing 12 gigs seems like an awful lot. My aftermarket SSD in an older model MacBook Pro did not lose that much, and it was a 512 as well.

I would like to know what other Retina owners are seeing. Thanks.

The 512GBs is based on 1000 bytes = 1 KB and the 499.42 is based on 1KB = 1024 bytes

That's just it, it isn't lost. The drive/computer manufacturers, yes even Apple, have lied to you. The formatting does use some space. That is what the .58GBs went.

They are just playing with the Math.
