Displays Icon missing in Menu Bar

I noticed I no longer have a displays menu bar icon. Previously, I could click it and I could Detect Displays, Mirror/Extend and change resolution. This is gone! I've opened a case and I'm informed that "it's been removed." Well, it was removed; AFTER I installed. I clearly had the menu bar icon until my first reboot. Afterwards, it's not come back -- and I'm not too happy about that.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm going to look like a jack hole having to go through System Preferences in the middle of a presentation... talk about awkward!

NOTE: This is not a question about AirPlay. I have a mid-2010 MBP with a 2.66GHz i7 and I'm already upset that it's "too old".

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion, 2.66G i7 NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

I can't do much about the menulet but if you click Option F1, you go straight to System Preferences > Displays.

Joseph,

I have checked that option, however, when I plug in my external monitor OR projector, no menu icon ever appears. In any case, after several reinstallations, not being able to correct the problem and AppleCare was stumped--I've since downgraded back to Lion.

As a side note, I was chided for upgrading so soon after release. I asked if I was supposed to apply the "Microsoft Rule" whereby new OSes aren't "good enough" until its first service pack. Humorously I was informed that that wasn't at all what was implied.

Thanks.

You can put it back by going to System/Core Services/Menu Extras. Look for Displays and drag it to your Menu Icon Bar. It will still show Mirroring but the options to scale and brightness will be there as well.

Well, I have to disagree with you there.

It was removed from the menu, for older machines anyway, and taken away from the menu bar.

They didn't move it, it has always been in the Display preferences. But they did take it away from the menu.

I don't have a newer model to verify what they show.

You can also press Option/F1 and bring up the Display preferences.

Still, not the same as being able to use the menu to change resolutions which was much easier.
