I am on Sierra. After fixing a problem with the disk I began to get the already in use message.
This password change was simple to try.
It WORKED!
My backup ran to completion (although it did take a long time).
I have same problem since upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion. It seems to have renamed my Macbook Air to be Macbook Air (2) & wont bacl up any more. I get the error message The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Martin’s MacBook Air (2).sparsebundle” is already in use.
This is what worked for me:
I reset my TC password to something else. It was orignally the same as my admin password in the keychain. I was reading the archives and ran across that. I was also having a problem with the TC unmounting, and freezing when I would try to go in and brouse the different backups. It would hang for about 15 minutes before I could get it to cacnel out, and the TC would no longer be mounted. I couldn't believe that that was actually what was causing the problen, but it worked in my case.
Also, here is a link you guys might find helpful:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html
That puts a widget into your widget screen and you can see the TC logs as it tries to connect. You might find it helpful for figuring out other issues
I also tried some of the things they wrote, like going into the TC, disconnecting the disk the putting it back - didn't work for me. Reset TC and PC restart didn't help. I was about to delete the sparsebundle file. Glad I didn't. Changin a passowrd is a lost easier.
Get that widget, thoug. That's pretty cool!
I tried several suggestions and only this one worked. Go to http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html and choose # C12. In my case, this began happening after I upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion.
I was having the same problem, and I saw elsewhere in these forums something that actually worked. It seems that the password was on the Time Capsule, not the AirPort wireless connection but the connection to the data store, was the same as my admin password. All I had to do was change the password on TC, then everything started working wonderfully.
I was even having trouble entering into the TC utility to explore the previous backup sessions. It would lock up completely, wouldn't respond to any mouse clicks, and would take like ten minutes to even cancel out of the screen.
Now everything connects, backs up on schedule, and the TC utility opens and responds.
Try it - this might save you some time and frustration.
I had the same problem and also fixed it by changing the password on the TC. Thanks to kprice13 and everyone else for sharing the problem and the solution.
This worked perfectly for me!! No need to change any passwords. Just follow the C12 insturctions and restart the Time Capsule....worked perfectly! Thanks for help JoeMenRod
Worked like a charm. Thanks JoeMenRod
This happened to me, As per JoeMenRod's post I think I fixed this by changing the password on the TC and then returning it back to the original PW.
Its backing up now at least.
I think this actually happened because the 2011 mac air I have died due to my daughters poor battery management after this it took me a while to get back on wifi and I noticed that the backups were failing.
It seems ok now, guess it just got its knickers in a bit of a twist.
THANKS JoeMenRod!!
I'm having this same issue, but I'm not using Time Capsule, but our lion server configured for TM. How can I fix mine error message?
I have 1 iMac and 2 MBPs using the TC.
It was working on the iMac and 1 MBP but I received the error message noted in the title of the thread on the second MBP.
Changing the password for the TC on the MBP on which it was working did the trick for me.
Good luck.
Hi, I changed the password on TC to something other than the other laptops etc. passwords. What else do I need to do now to make the backups work again? The good thing is I am not getting the sparsebundle message. But when I click on 'back up' now it says 'the backup disk is not available".... Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks.
Marlow, I have your same problem...how do I fix it? I tried to rename my computer and back up again, but it did not work, as my computer automatically changed name again...
Ok, so I am not very technical so some of these threads are difficult for me. After a few MONTHS of getting some strange message that said my prosparse bundle could not be accessed, i finally just deleted my pro-spars bundle and then initiated time machine. that worked! very simple. i couldn't change passwords per the advice, so i thought i would share this alternative method. of course it is going to take a few hours to redo my backup, but it is worth it. just time it for night. i am still working on it though so i guess it isn't a big deal. i would just warn against starting the process when you need to take your computer out of range of your TC.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Danny Showalter's Time Caps/Danny’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.
All I had to do was restart my Time Capsle
