So does this still apply to the MacBook Pro?

I recently (like barely 2 weeks ago) received my MacBook Pro. it is the 1.83 processor. Well, i looked at Apple Website only to find (to my horror) that Apple now has the 2.0 processor for the exact same price that i paid. Well, I contacted Apple and explained my situation. And they accepted my exception and were willing to take back my 1.83, and send me a 2.0!! they even waived the 10% restocking fee (about $200) and i only had to pay shipping and handling. Well, the only problem is, i had to send it back in the original box. Well, i threw the **** thing out. Usually I keep boxes like that for "just in case" but this time i didn't, and well it bit me in the butt.

Being a recent convert to a Mac, I am not aware about the processor upgrades I can do for a MacBook Pro. And reading this post makes me sad. Apple solders the processor to the board, making it only upgradeable if you pay for it?!

So am I s.o.l. about upgrading?

I am guessing they will cross-reference the serial number that was bought by the OP and the one on the barcode that is on the box so this won't work?

jacse, I am in the same boat as you. I bought a 1.83 and within a few weeks they upgraded them all to 2.0. I am not particularly worried or dissapointed. I bought it knowing it would perform well for me and do what I needed it to do and just because there is an upgrade doesn't mean it still won't do that for the next 3-5 years. During regular use, you're not very likely to see the difference either way.

I appreciate the offer to use your box. if it would work, i would accept.

the only reason i want a 2.0, was A) I had JUST purchased my new MBP, and B) I like to have the latest and greatest, even if i don't need it, just because i can.

i think the principle of the thing was that apple was willing to take it back to begin with. That impresses me. it is my own stupid fault that i can't get the upgrade now.

oh well.

I got my MBP on 3/19/06... do you think that is too long ago to ask that they replace my 1.83 with the 2.0? Also, what was the number you called... and what are some good lines that you used to butter them up/guilt trip them? It's rather impressive that you basically talked your way to a new computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
