Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

Hey guys -

Old MBP user new MBPr user - 15" 16G / 2.5 and my entire bank account 🙂

Given how much I spent on this I expected nothing short of amazing. I am realistic of my expectations and based what I thought my experience would be on my old 15" MBP. From day one I have been having issues. In almost any resolution but definitely prevelant in the highest.

Screen glitches, artifacts. You name it. Safari performance is down right 2001 for me personally. Facebook glitches like crazy - blocks, missing windows ... mostly trying to just go with it given the heart attack I would have if I focused on how much I spent on this laptop and how little it's performing. Today the screen saver even came on and would not go off without a hard reboot. Thoughts?

Yes photoshop is great - and the processor speeds seem wonderful OUTSIDE of safari - but web browsing is difficult sometimes? Really? Not to mention this laptop actually seems to be more hot than the old one. Really ... I love apple as much as the next fanboy but this is hard to swollow right now for having given up a dvd drive, personal maintanence and my pension.

Just wanted to add my name to the list as I really hope apple issues a fix of there is one to be had in software. We are far too loyal and spend too much money to have something that performs worse than a half priced windows machine.

Well, my personal last hope is that with the release of the 13" rMBP, we'll get support from all the users using this machine. Don't forget: In the 13" model there won't be a discrete graphics card, so the lag will be terrible for all of them. 😝

What do you think about that?

I'm pretty sure there will be a discrete graphics card in the 13inch Retina. It's a PRO MacBook

and doubt it would have lesser gaphical abilities then the normal 13 inch.

I need to share my sadness too. I bought my first mac in september, MBPr (2.6/12/512) and i use it for coding (Xcode), web and so on. Since I'm using it I'm felling very sad with so poor perfomance on doing basic stuff like scrolling text on Xcode it lags so much! What is goin' on? Scrolling text it lags?

I think something is not right, and this is my first mac, I own an iPad and iPhone. This is my worst experience with Apple products!

EDIT: Another this thats fuc.king annoys me is the f.ucking scroll lag on Mail.app! W.TF? Lag on mail messages?

As far as I'm concerned, I feel significantly less lags when the processor and memory aren't so much used, safari and chrome can run smoothly, with either internal or nvidia card. Is this the same case for you, or have you these lags everytime, from the start ?

I feel the same lag from a fresh reboot or after hours and hours of work on my rMBP... the cpu and ram are more than enough to drive this computer during loads, in addition to its very fast SSD.

One thing I have noticed is the Google Chrome browser is remarkebly smoother than the Safari brower, I dont get any artifacts or zoom slow down/crunching when scrolling on Chrome.. I'm hoping this means there is a problem with Safari that just needs an update (of course this is outside of the other UI lag).

Also I dont know about you guys, but I've been getting a couple crashes a week that require a hard reset, its driving me insane.. also the airplay mirroring audio sometimes wont work, just the video will go through and when I go to system preferences to choose airplay as the audio ouput the mirroring just crashes - only solution for this is to reset my computer every time it happens and it seems to work, but VERY annoying....

BTW: anyone reading this forum with the same problems as us with the retina MBP please post a comment here.. the bigger the forum of dissatisfied customers get the more attention we will get from the tech media (like Cnet) and eventually Apple.

These are different issues and I, for one, have never thought that Safari was noticably slower than Chrome. I don't get any of the unusual lagginess in Safari any more than any other part of the OS. My particular issue just relates to going to mission control (nee, Expose) for the first time after a while of not doing it. That's it. Aside from that issue, I have no trouble with this computer. It's probably the best Mac I've ever owned, actually.

My wife's early 2010 MBA doesn't have any of the same lagginess going to MC so I'm sure it's just a software thing unique to the MBP. I expect this will be fixed quickly.

are you telling me that when you zoom into a webpage in safari (for example right in this forum) and start scrolling up and down you have no lag or choppiness on your retina macbook pro? I've test 5 retina macs that all exhibited this problem. I constantly zoom since the text sizes are usually small and I dont always use the "reader;" zooming and scrolling in safari is very choppy when compared to chrome... please test this and clarify.

It's not butter smooth but it's not terrible. At any rate, not enough for me to get worked up about. 🙂 I think that most people realize version 1 of any new hardware or software is going to have growing pains. With this version 1 of both the rMBP and ML, you're seeing that in full effect.

Now, let's wait for the first returns of 13" rMBP... 😎

As I said a few posts before, the new 13" rMBP has NO discrete graphics cards. 😝

So, they will have a lot of fun enjoying the terrible lag caused by the Intel HD 4000. 😀

I personally can't WAIT to see all these 13 inch Retinas unable to perform simple desktop switching without choppy animations. I'm getting my popcorn.

OK - this is IT !!!!!!

I have a IMac 27", rMBP 15", two iPAD, Mac TV and a IPhone 5.

I had the rMBP for a couple of month now, and have like you all experienced this terrible lag.

Im very disappointed by the way Apple is ignoring this problem. After all it is not cheap products they are manufactoring. How can Apple just sit back and dont even give any feedback?!?!?

This is leading me to conclude that I will never ever buy any apple products again - period!

I believe this is the a solution on this problem.

First, make sure you have gfxCardStatus installed and set it to Discreet Only.

Then go to your terminal and type in the following command:

sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext/ /System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.disable

Enter your password.

Quit out of Terminal and restart your computer.

After restarting, allow your computer to enter into sleep mode (in Energy Saver, slide the bar to 1 minute to put it to sleep sooner). Wake it up, and run your computer normally. Go to Safari and see if your scrolling has improved or not. If it has, you can change gfxCardStatus back to Dynamic Switching.

Let me know if this worked for you.

Thanks for the trick ! Indeed, it seems to be a little better .. but the FAN are running constantly, and according to istat menu, GPU temperature stays elevated 😮

I also share some tips I tried :

• NO LONGER use TweetDeck application that clearly brings lag (at least, for me) ;
• I used to use the 1920 x 1200 screen resolution. I've installed the utility SwitchResX (shareware), and set the 2048 x 1280 screen resolution.

Just a little difference, but with that, my rMBP looks better !
