Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

I'm sorry - no. My retina mac does the smooth glide upon start or restart, so does my girlfriend's and they both exhibit the horrible lag throughout the rest of the system; that is not a indicator of a defective unit, there are so many other problems with the UI you can't single one out and say that=defective.

I've worked on at least 15 rMBP. Of the fifteen that ARE working, they having the gliding startup. I played Warcraft and all the iApps for hours without a hitch. Clearly the ones with bad startup are the only ones that are defective. Mine works flawlessly for 20 minutes, believe me I do heavy photoshop work, browse, email and play 3D games. Every one them lag after 20 minutes, and none with the proper gliding startups show any sign of lag for hours. This is true to heart experience with 15 rMBP's. Clearly, not all are defective, and I'm beginning to look at other possibilities, such as SSDs or defective thermal sensors, as the source of the problem.

I know how people like to keep coming back to the hardware, but I really think it's OS/software related.... poor optimization. I've played several games on my rMBP and all worked flawlessly for hours on end - Dishonoured, Boarderlands 2, Walking Dead to name a few of the more recent ones. As you can tell both under osx and under windows 7. Not a hint of lag, no slow downs over time, no audio issues. Also since installing WebKit I've had a really pleasant experience browsing the internet - very little to no lag now scrolling. So in my opinions it's purely really poorly optimized OS that Apple doesn't seem to know/care about fixing, and they should be ashamed about.

The mail app is a lag fest, mission control is typically laggy, and the audio issue I have where I get pops and stutters when playing songs in iTunes is really annoying. I guess taking the unit back and getting parts replaced is a good idea, as we'll be using up Apples parts.

One thing I can complain about is the screen - I love it but I've already had it replaced once now for dead pixels. Last night I found a cluster of dead ones on the new screen. I essentially bought the unit for the screen and any issues with that are completly unacceptable.

Not a happy customer either, as we can all complain dropping $3000 + on what is supposed to be their "ultimate" laptop ever and have this poor of a use experience is totally unacceptable.

Does anyone know if you can get store credit from Apple after the return period has expired?

I had my motherboard replaced by an Apple Genius yesterday, and as feared, my rMBP shows no improvement 😟 I thought everything was ok playing with it for nearly an hour at the Apple Store, but as usual, you bring it home, all the symptoms reappears.

What do I do now?? Sell it? Get another motherboard replacement?? Hope for a miracle?

Today I've been to the store where they have both 13" and 15" Retinas. Both were running smoothly, I mean Mission Control, Lanuchpad, scrolling in Calendar & Safari, resizing TextEdit and even Excel 2011 worksheet. The OS compilation installed was 12C2034 on 13" and 12C3006 on 15".

There was also a slight, strange difference in how Mission Control behaved when four fingers are continuously held on touchpad. I mean in my compilation (12C60) when I put four fingers upwards and keep them on touchpad zoom out goes all the way, when I put fingers back - zoom goes in all the way. But you can never keep the zoom in middle-way. On those computers in shop - I could stop my fingers halfway and zoom-out wasn't complete. Basically I could move my fingers slightly up and down and zoom level also changed slightly in and out.

Received my replacement today, which is identical to my previous rMBP.

Best way to test for me: open safari and rapidly press cmd+n and open about 10-15 windows. Then launch mission control.

My MB air does the job with no problem, however, my rMBP which is 2x more powerful, opens the windows very slowly, the screen freezes and mission control is extremely choppy.

You might argue that this wont affect my everyday use, but I am not going to pay £3k for a system that performs worse than my 2 year old MB air.

Gonna get store credit until something new comes out.

This test with Safari is nice. I'm gonna do it in the store.

Do you have "empty page" or "top sites" in new window? With the latter my rMBP 15" freezes for about 15-20 seconds.

I tried this test on pretty much every retina display laptop in the store and none of them could handle it. Some even displayed graphical anomalies when launching mission control.

When the retina displays will be on par with the performance of "standard" MBP's or even MB airs, then I will get one.

It's so disheartening knowing that I dropped $3K onto a machine that is not working properly. I'm sure the next iteration of any rMBP line will have significant improvements, but in the meantime I must get back to work! Will an i7 MBA be powerful enough to run Photoshop smoothly?

I am currently using an i7 air with 4GB ram, and photoshop runs fine.

This will be my laptop until they fix or release a new retina display product.

Can people stop whining, and post constructive stuff like which could actually help to solve this problem?

Furthermore the problem is the whole UI, not just Safari, and yes every rMBP has it. If you "think" you don't have it, that is because your not noticing it.

The problem is either SMC related, or OSX related. Any non rMBP Pro runs the UI smooth. So if you have a lagging non rMBP, then your issue is not related to the rMBP lagging.

I had a long talk with the apple support, but they haven't come back with an answer.

However, there is an update coming, 10.8.2, there is on the developer stages, does anyone have a developer account and tell us if the update does help with the problem?

Same issues here, got my new rMBP 13" yesterday and noticed some extremley annoying lags using the basic Mac OS tools. I don't understand why this problem is not a popular issue, if every rMBP has this problems.

Before buying i was curious about the performance of this machine, but the performance is great. I played some simple games and used the Adobe CS6 Suite and it works all over great. I know its only the HD 4000 but it's totally OK, but the UI lags make this machine not useable at all.

My roomate owns an 13" MBA and it works totally smooth compared with my rMBP. I have no idea why apple is selling just idiotic machines like this.

By the way: I love the retina display and I love the design and quality. But I don't understand why I should spend over 1,5k to have lags in the everday use.

I contacted the support 2x. First I had to reset the PRAM. Doesn't work. After that he offered me to send me a new one, of course: without lags. I told him that I have really no interest in waiting 2 weeks for another sloppy machine. So he told me to ask someone if there is any software update in developing that could fix this issue. After he placed me on hold I lost the connection...

Second genius told me to start in secure mode, the lagging got even harder. His expert opinion is that my rMBP has an hardwaredefect, and I should get a new one, guaranteed without lags. I told him the same, but he answerd that the rMBP's are totally great computers and normally they don't lag. After that discussion he told me to reinstall Mac OS and get a new one, but nothing changed.

I tried different fixes as well. Installing AutoCAD, doesn't work for me. And deleting some files and deleting PRAM after that doesn't work for me, too.

Tomorrow I will send my rMBP back to apple. And probaly I will order the MBA 13" and save about 400€. Sad story, I really liked the retina

Apparently the new 10.8.2 includes graphics updates?
