Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

Mine is lagging as well. Done a clean install with Mountain Lion, got a bit better, but its still lagging. Retina 2,6GHz i7 16GB. Tried an 2,3GHz, 8GB in the store, and it wasn't lagging at all.

i am in a state of dissapointment, Lagginess, choppyness is so much apparent when using safari, mail, mission control. i just hope this is not inherited problem in rMBP. i am overseas for my vacations and will visit genius bar as soon as i get back to canada. This is the last thing one would expect frm apple. Just hoping to receive necessary update asap. This problem is eroding the interest in this MAchine.

I have the same problem here. I have never been this disappointed with Apple products. I use mail all the time and now it lags on me like crazy. I used a 2006 macbook pro before I switched to retina, and the display was super super smooth. I really hope apple cares about this issue.

I've tried this (like a other all):

I've opened some picture (18MP JPG) in "Anteprima" (in italian) "Preview" in English and did 2 finger swipe to change from one to other one.

So, I've seen a really smooth transition.

I've tried to move into a zoomed photo and movements were smooth.

This with integrated Intel video card.

For me thisi is strange because, on one side I've seen smooth transitions and animations and this is the proof that video card is good to move 5M pixels at the same time;

on another side if I try to change window size of preview I can see a big lag but the problem isn't video card (for waht I've just said)... and problem isn't a driver optimization because the driver is the same of the first try....

So, I don't know where are the problem (maybe Quarzt bad optimization - but the QuartzCore library is the same) but there are a some lags (in this moment, while scrolling Safari I can see a double line os portion of this text. scrolling up and down and another part of page is vanished - but this is Safari...-)...

Yesterday i decided to do another clean install.

Indded, i found a procedure on a french website a bit different then the one i did a couple of weeks ago.

this time i completely erased the hard drive, a thing i didn't do on my first attempt.

and, believe it or not, it completely changed everything ! No more lags during waking after long sleep mode, smoother mission control and even safari is quicker. still some lags on theverge.com, but, the situation is way better than it used to be.

I'm having a hard time believing that a reinstall (reformating of the hard drive) would have anything to do with the lag of the UI in the OS??

Are you saying that if you open TextEdit, expand it to a full size window, insert a bunch of text so that is fills the document on your your screen, and then scrolls through it, you have nog lagging any more?? If this is true, I am truly amazed by this discovery and I would really like a technical explaination how this can be the case.

Isnt there att better way of testing if there is lag or not, so that we dont have to depend on the personal experience from person to person. I would love to have a FPS logger that runs side by side with the OS or something, just to make sure everybody is having the same "experience".

I am returning my Macbook today for a routine repair service or something that the Apple Care said I should do. They didnt seemt to understand what the real problem was. I am not surprised though, cos the guy working at the support didnt know how to say "Cache" even though he order me to remove it 🙂

If anyone have the opportunity to follow this reinstall adventure, please report back to us, we are eager to hear if this is really working.

I did not haver the time to test everything but my experience is far better and trust me i really thought this would not change antything. but it did.

the best improvement i saw is the waking up: before that reinstall, it took me more than 15 secs to get off sleep mode, now it's fully operational immediately, even after a whole night of sleep mode.

app opening is faster too: i opened my 150go' iphoto library while encoduing a full hd vid on final cut, 10 tabs in sfari with 1080 youtube running, mail and itunes. no lag, everything was popping up in a second

so maybe i did not try everything, maybe some lags are still here, but my experience is completely different now.

Opening apps is not the UI-lag I am experiencing. Opening apps is really fast, mainly coz of the Solid State Disk.

Could you please just test some simple scrolling in TextEdit ?

The most of the problem with the scroll lag (for me) is when there is alot of text on the screen. Such as when coding in XCode with in maxed out window ... or just any text editor... with a lot of text. It goes down to maybe 20 FPS or lower sometimes. Thats when its the most irritating for me, as I am coding is something I do all day long 🙂

The lagging also shows when trying to max/min windows with alot of text in it. It stutters like ****, probably down to 10 FPS or something.

Could you please test this?

This is exactly the way I did my clean install. As I said - the lagging got better, but its definitely not as smooth as my old MPB or the iMac, nor as the rMBP I tested in a local store.

I tested the scrolling in Textedit as bobmoff asked for, and that was actually quite smooth. Mission control, often the dock (which I hide automatically), scrolling in Google og Safari is lagging. I am using Aperture, and when I use Mission control when Aperture is running, it lags a lot. Whats funny, is when I am repeating Mission control quickly after each other its a lot smoother. Its just the first time when I haven't done it for a while.

I hope for an update to fix this problem finally. Such an expensive machine should not lag. I am living far from the nearest Apple store. Has anybody been to an Apple store and got any explanation or solution?

Bad news (for me): my gf just used my computer and she called me to tell that when she got it off sleep mode, she had to wait 20 seconds before she could move the mouse. the clock was frozen at yesterday night hour (when i got it into sleep mode). so, back to square one.

I also bought a new rMBP yesterday and having the UI lag issues. Using Mission control is terrible. I spoke with an Apple advisor today. He couldn't offer any solution except suggesting that it might be fixed in future software updates, when Intel cares to provide new drivers to Apple. I'm probably going to return it next week.

Just adding my voice here. Same symptoms than everybody: Laggy UI on rMBP 2.7GHz, 16GB RAM.

This is not acceptable for such an expensive machine.

Right now Apple does not say nothing about UI lags and other Retina problems that we are described.

I think 10.8.1 will not resolve our problems but we need solutions.

I spoke with my lower and she said (oh, my lower is my wife really) to call Apple to say problem. In Italy warranty-low is strange (like rest of all) but I think we call Apple to say what are doing to ours rMBP.
