Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

Because during the first hours, the rMBP doesn't really show a strong lag

It's most of the time when you spend more hours and get working on some heavy softwares that the lag comes. But, yes it should be mentioned on the reviews.. And I looked for a lot of ones without any word of this issue (that was I bought it). Now, my rMBP just leaved my home and is in the road to Netherlands. I will buy a new MBP classic mid 2012, here I trust on them !

How does this get past QC and not mentioned in 99% of the reviews for this product?

Possibly because it's not an issue for everyone? On my Mac Book Pro the animation isn't fast, but if were any faster, it really wouldn't be worth having at all.

You can dispense with the animation altogether by using the left/right arrows in the upper right of the Calendar window. Command left/right arrow key are another alternative.

But that's not the point. Of course the iCal animation is useless. But it's a clear indicator that something is wrong between the Retina display and the hardware/software running it. It's just an extreme example of the UI Lag elsewhere in the OS.

I'm just curious as to whether or not you own a rMBP? If you do, do you not experiance the UI Lag i just reported? If you don't then I will take this to the Mac Store tomorrow and swap it out for another one which doesn't have UI Lag.

If the truth is that only a small percentage of the rMBP have this problem then in my opnion that's a bigger issue then if they all do. That means that a small percentage of users are getting a sub-par user experiance without word from Apple that they should go swap it out for a working machine.

Everyone get the same issue, and even Apple technicians know it and advised me to return it for another version (classic one) if I can't support this lag. An update would be efficient for some months, and then you will notice that the Retina also lag on some softwares, heavy ones. That's the truth, and this only happen with the Retina. They reach the hardware limits with this insane screen, maybe a better association of GC would help it to work better. For that time I think this laptop is not optimized, and not ready at all..

I don't own one, no. However, I've played around a fair amount with them at the Apple Store and nothing seemed to lag.

Did your's come with ML or did you upgarde from LIon?

But regardless, of what I have to say, I'd definately visit the Apple Store if you're not happy!

I currently own a Retina Macbook Pro and I also work with two additional ones. I have tested the calendar transition on all three Retina Macs and it is definitely choppier than compared to my 2011 Macbook Pro running ML.

This doesn't bother me as much as my Mail client's incredibly laggy scrolling though. However, my mail scroll lag issue doesn't seem to affect the other two Retina Macs I have at work. My retina lags whenever I scroll through the contents of an e-mail while the other two Retina Macs show no sign of lag here.

Just an update. I noticed last night after making a fresh installation of ML through internet recovery, I installed gcc complier 4.8 (which is unstable) and after that I started having issues with UI animations. I uninstalled it and since then UI animations have been pretty smooth. This morning I compared rMBP with MBP and I found while running on battery UI animations are sometime not as smooth as they are on my last year MBP, but still acceptable. I do think that in future versions of ML, we will hopefully have better graphics drivers. But the meantime I suggest checking third party applications as I suspect sometime they are causing trouble.

This is obviously a big problem given that this thread was the top result to my Google search for "mountain lion mouse lagging" this morning. I do not have a rMBP, but am noticing the same issues after upgrading my late 2010 MBP. Given that I don't have a rMBP, I cannot compare whether the issue is worse or the same between models, but I at least wanted to add my two cents to the thread in case Apple is reviewing it.

I only see choppy mouse drag in Safari, Mail, Calendar, and iTunes. If I'm using FireFox or Chrome to view the exact same websites as in Safari, or any other apps on the laptop, there are no performance issues whatsoever. Very strange, but I am not rebuilding my MPB from scratch, so it looks like I'll have to deal with this until the issue is corrected in an update. I also have a 2008 old style MBP, and a 2011 27" iMac, and neither of those computers has the issue, despite being upgraded to Mountain Lion at the same time as my 2010 MBP.

Please fix this, Apple!

I believe this problem is related to extensive scaling that rMBP must do all the time. If i switch to (officialy unsupported) native resolution of 2880 x 1800 then there is no lag at all, neither in Safari, Mission Control, Launchpad...

Hm ... that's interesting ...

But given the fact that my iMac (Early 2008) showed the same symptoms under OS X Lion and now (OS X ML) runs absolutely smooth can be seen as a proof that it's a software-related issue? I mean the hardware of my iMac didn't change. ^^

So, I hope that an update will help us to experience a lag-free MBPr. 🙂 Especially iTunes, Mail and Mission Control are inacceptable currently. 😟

Good news everyone!

I talked to an Apple Engineer. They gathered some system diagnostics stuff from my rMBP and they anaylized it for the past few days. I just received a call from them to tell me that they acknowledge the problem and he told me that this is definitly a software issue that could come from the firmware. They are working on a fix.

This is a great news! I was thinking to return it as my retraction period is going to be over during this weekend. I had also spoken to an Apple advisor (and shared with him some snapshots) but he could not offer any solution. Can you please share some more details about the issues you are having, it will help me to decide whether I should return mine or wait for the fix? My rMBP runs smooth sometime, but other times (these are more often) it becomes really choppy while using Mission control. I'm also having a problem with my Gmail account. In Safari I see lots of visual artefacts (I'm attaching an image with this post). Though that doesn't happen when I use Chrome, but with Chrome playing a Youtube video in one tab, Mission Control becomes teriibly slow.

I'm literally ****** off this time as I spent close to 3000 Euro for this machine and I don't understand why Apple is taking so much time to fix this issue.

On the MACBOOK AIR mid 2011 I narrow down the problem to SWITCHING desktops with open applications, specially with safari in one desktop.

Maybe 10.8.2 could solve our problem is 10.8.1 doesn't.

I really hope that graphic drivers gonna be improved... It's a little bit disappointing to see poor performances on OS X games compared to Windows...
