Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

I personally think the UI lagging bug is a serious issue on rMBP because this machine cost $2000 and up and it lags on UI features such as Mission Control and Space Switching while classic Macbook pros don't. I do understand that the retina display models carries a high resolution display, but I think the quad core CPU should have the ability to handle it (please correct me if I am wrong)

I am hoping and asking anyone experiencing the issue to follow up with this thread and post your concerns. Let's hope for a fix soon and we can really enjoy the beauty a Retina Macbook Pro brings to us.

Mr NO-Lag: could you please try this:

1. Open Text Edit

2. Fill it with alot of text

3. Expand window to max

You should have text over the whole screen.

4. Scroll the window with your touch pad

If this scrolling is smooth for you, I would be very happy, but I have a hard time believing it.

I am also curious if this scroll lag was reported ftom the earlier guy that said that they(apple) would look into to the problem.

I dont personalky use Mission Control at all. I have Alfred to launch programs. So my real problem is when coding/working. For that I need a large window with alot of text. But I have to run all my apps in low res mode to have a smooth scrolling experience.

I feel cheated when buying a retina and have to run all programs on low res.

I've experienced similar problem with my rMBP. The desktop switching is smooth after unchecking automatic graphics switching in energy sever options. However, I still experience lag when resizing textEdit window.

My question is, should I exchange my rMBP in an appStore? I bought it two weeks ago, so today is the last day I can do it. I am just curious, whether anybody determined what is the cause of the UI problems. Is there a chance that a new model of rMBP will be working fine or is it an issue with all the models?

Im writing from an appstore right now using one of their rMBPs and it has the same issues. I unplugged battery and authomatic graphic switching is turned on. Scrolling in the text editor is laggy and when you switch desktops it is easy to notice that it's not smooth by the end of the animation. I'm just wondering, do people not notice this issue with retina macbooks? Apparently, I am the first person in this appstore who came with this problem.

I hear you, I don't want to return mine either. The MBP classics look like **** after using the retina for a few weeks. It's just tragic that transition animations look aweful since we all bought this thing for its display aesthetics. Here's to hoping they push out a fix.

^ Tru Dat (On the ealier 10.8.2 developer non-disclosure agreement comment)

But nice to hear it clears up the problem for some. Although there should be a 10.8.3 around the corner to truely address this and be a cpmplete fix.

Alexis, it sounds like you had Lion on your rMBP and there was no lag correct? Does it support the resolutions the rMBP runs at? Sounds like downgrading could be a good solution for some, and obviously points to a software / video card driver issue. (Which I guess is a good thig cause ulitimatly it should be an easy fix and not a massive hardware recall).

I'm still drop jawed that they released it like this. 😮

I'm running 10.8 on a retina MBP 2.6 16gb. Feeding two 24" HP monitors via HDMI and DVI.

I've been using Avid Media Composer 6.0.3.1 and experience lag on full screen playback, but not so much with the smaller source and record windows. By "lag" I mean that during significant movement within a movie, portions of the image will appear to "tear" horizontaly or not keep up with other portions, as if it's having trouble updating. I've spent hours testing the hardware - mirroring the rMBP with either or both of the HP monitors indicates without a doubt this anomaly occurs exactly the same way on all monitors simultaneously.

My question: is anyone reading this thread encountering similar problems with video playback through an NLE such as Avid?

Hi All,

I'd also like to add that the same UI 'lag' issues appear to exist on the 2012 MBA Corei7 8GB. The frame rates when performing simple UI tasks can drop significantly especially with effects like dock magnification enabled.

All signs at this stage point to the Intel HD 4000 GPU which is the common denominator b/w the rMBP and MBA - if you give 10.8 a test drive on a recent gen iMac it's almost flawless!

A question for Alexis - after installing 10.8.2 how are the frame rates when cycling the dock? Yes it's aesthetic but nevertheless important for the whole Mac experience 🙂

I recently bought Mac Book Pro Retina and this is my 4th pro. Everything seemed OK but when I started going to mission control and expose (even with fewer windows), my rMBP is sluggish then my last year MBP (I have double windows opened and it way smoother than rMBP).

I went to the Genesis bar and got really disappointed. One for the reason that the person there does not even recognize there is lag. According to the person, it is OK and acceptable. Since when Apple started making acceptable products. I thought Apple always makes exceptional products and it puts lot of effort on these animations to make them silky smooth and lag free.

Second reason, the person said if I am not happy, I can return.

Thirdly, it seemed as he/she does not even have enough know of Mac OS. As in Mountain Lion the 'Software Update...' is part of App Store Update, he has no clue about it and said I was doing somthing wrong.

Forth, I showed this (and other such posts on Apple Support related to lag issue) and response was that this is only happening to few people. Does that mean there is no issue since there are few people?

I never expeceted Apple to ship a product which is not at par in UI as per Apple's own standards. I might return it back if Apple does not solve issue with rMBP.

rMBP (2.3GHz, 16GB, Intel 4000, Nvidia 1GB) old MBP (2.3GHz, 8GB, Intel 3000, Raedon 1GB).

I have a 2.6Ghz 16Gb 512GB rMBP and am having all the same issues.. the lag is just awful - just for you guys to know I'm on my 4th computer, the 3 previous have had terrible reproducible hardware problems, all of them also exhibited the UI lag. I'm really concerned with the QC of Apple these days.

As others have mentioned I don't really want to return this computer as its currently the best option in the Apple lineup and unfortunately I'm pretty sucked into the Apple ecosystem - I hope this issue gets a fix and Apple steps up cause with the direction theyre going itll be no time until their computers become as unreliabe as PCs were 10 years ago..

I've been getting lags while switching spaces using the control arrow method, funny thing is that when I only get lags/stutter when switching from either fullscreen app to desktop or dashboard to desktop. No lag while transitioning from desktop to Full screen apps or dashboard. the lag is improved when I use the Nvidia card but does not disapear completely, Is this the stutter lag that every one has been talking about?
