Q: Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

For those who are frustrated with web scrolling: start using Webkit browser. Scrolling is super smooth (youtube, facebook etc). Viewing PDF's is still laggy though, but Webkit proves that the GPU can handle the hi-res. My impression about this machine has improved since I started using Webkit.

If you are frustrated with laggy apps (iTunes, Mail, Chrome), the only way is to open them in low resolution.

How does one run a programme in low resolution?

Go to the application in finder, rightclick->get info or cmd+i, tick the checkbox, be prepared for bleeding eyes...

And exactly what adamstark said. Its good that you try to find a solution, but in this case it has nothing to do with hardware faults and there is no simple software fix. Apple needs to reimplement some parts of the code to run it on the GPU. Webkit and some other third party application have done exactly that and they run super smooth now.

Webkit should solves the issue for the browser, for other application we have to be patient until Apple updates the applications. My guess is 10.9, but who knows...

I hope so.... this would be awesome... over a year of waiting.

I also noticed that the Bootscreen (where you choose the operating system if you have more than one by holding ALT) is pixelated, like low resolution. It was not like that before.

I really did not change any settings or did any update.

What could that be? Is anybody experiencing the same?

Finally Chrome runs smooth very nicely on my rmbp! At least the alpha/beta versions. For me, they are also a lot faster than the WebKit nightlies

Opera just anounced that they depend on the same technology as Chrome. Therefore it performs quite nice as well. Here is the link if you want to try it out: http://opera.org/next

It seems that we soon do not have to worry about browser performance and alpha versions anymore! Which is the only thing which really bothered me. Mission control is still horrible, but i don't use it. Same goes for some other OSX applications (iCal and so on).

Not much different here. Maybe mine's not affected by this lag problem after all?

Wooow.. I have to say, Google Chrome just works fine even better than WebKit .. Thanks for this advice

I'm confident enough to say that my recent activities with developers have nearly diminished all lag on my rMBP. The latest Beta releases of Nvidia CUDA have help eliminate a substantial amount of lag. I can only hope that the new operating system 10.9 will eradicate Retina lag once and for all.

In the meantime, two things I'm hoping for asap:

- A physcial software/hardware updater for the Intel 4000 HD integrated GPU and

- Another round of EFI and SMC updates for the rMBP line

We're getting close folks. Apple is listening.

What version of Nvidia Drivers do you got Wayne? I have updated to CUDA Driver Version: 5.0.59 GPU Driver Version: 8.10.44 304.10.65f03 and i saw almost no improvements. What kind of tweaks have you done and what results have you achieved? Thanks

I will only do a Clean install of all things when 10.9 is released, or if 10.8.4 is really worth that effort.

I HAD DISCOVERED A WORKAROUND:

1)  Download: TightVNC Java Viewer JAR in a ZIP archive,  It's a TightVNC JAVA client...

2)  Open  tightvnc-jviewer.jar

3)  Press CMD+H to hide the window (optional) , and be Happy !!!!

Performance is great, but it locks on the NVIDIA... but, it's fast, and no lag at alll....

Try it and post your results...

it's not the same that blocking the Graphic card to the Nvidia with gfxCardStatus, for example? If is the same maybe it's more simple this last.

No, the gfxCardStatus blocked on NVIDIA does not give the same performance... try for yourself and post your results....

Bottom line is performance on rMBP is better when you lock gfxCardStatus onto Discreet (Nvidia GPU). I'm flipping the GPU back and forth, and as soon as I switch to Intel HD 4000, the performance declines, goes back into lagginess. We need a fix for the Intel GPU!!
