Q: Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

This thread can't ever be a serious thread if people keep posting things that make no sense.

Firstly, Every Macbook Pro Retina I tested in the Mac Store has UI Lag.  If YOU cannot detect the UI Lag, than your threshold for detecting it is higher then the rest of us or you simply don't know what UI lag is.  I can't speak for every person who has  MBPr, but if every single one in the Mac Store has UI Lag, then why would only certain peoples computers NOT have UI Lag?

Secondly, the display type and or SSD is not causing your UI Lag.  This is 100 percent not true.

Thirdly, doing fresh installs, or updating the OS does NOT solve the problem.  It never did, so when you come into the thread and say that the lag was better for a little while when you updated your OS, but then got worse again, you are misleading people into thinking that updating the OS or doing a fresh install will fix the UI Lag.  If the lag "came back" for you, it was never gone and always there in the first place BECAUSE...

The UI Lag has to do with the GPU's onboard the MBPr.  That is what is causing UI Lag.  If you switch to your nvidia GPU, you will notice less lag because the problem has to do with refershing the insane amount of pixels on the retina screen.

What we need is a statement from apple saying, "we acknowledge the UI Lag, it is because of a driver issue bla bla bla"  OR "we acknowldge the UI Lag, sorry we sould you hardware that doesn't fully support the retina screen yet"

Yeah I think you're right. Actually it seems that the hardware is not yet capable to fulfill the requirements of the retina display. But now the question arises for me what could be done? Apple can't expect us using such an expensive machine with lags. What do you suppose to do that this issue becomes important for apple?

X2 there... it's not the SSD, or the display "Type" (Amount of pixels maybe ).  Niether of those things make sense as a suspect.

Intel Integrated Graphics have always been "meh" at best, it will not suprise me if that is confirmed as the pain point. Sure they are low power consuming, but the amount of pixels the retina is pushing calls for more power!  I hope drivers can fix it.

I still can't belive it was released like this.  I will be waiting for a fixed Rev 2 to purchase a rMBP.

Agree, but do not forget the UI lag happens also on Mac Book Air since ML was installed. Desktop switching is particularly terrible. I got an acknowledge of the lag on the Genius Bar at NYC grand central an recommended me to wait for a software update.

We reproduce the issue in two mid-2011 MacBook Air SSD previously working perfect with Lion. For us, 100% software issue.

So it will be interesting what apple is going to do with those which are already sold. In my case I'm not accepting a laggy macbook.

Having the same problems here. I think this problem is unacceptable for such a pricy machine! Why does Apple not respond to our concerns?? All early adopters who have been so loyal to the company for all those years deserve more than this. I'm 100 percent sure it's just a driver issue but it seems that the company has lost their interest in loyal buyers and is fixing those iphone maps because they earn more money with the iphone.

I'm also 100 percent sure that Steve Jobs would not have given his approval for this machine... Sorry, hate to say this....but I'm feeling betrayed by the new Apple.

You want to talk about loyalty... lets talk about Apple's lack of customer service. The Apple Care rep that was communicating with me regarding the issues I am having with my mac all of a sudden just started ignoring my e-mails. Add that to all the manufacturing problems I had with my first 3 macbook pro retinas AND the dents and scratches I came across when opening 2 brand new iPhone 5s - Apple has lost it, I actually want Windows 8 to be something of a monster to put Apple back on its toes... Steve Jobs built a legacy on customer service and perfection Tim Cook and his team have managed to take that apart fast just to make profit. I was a huge Apple supporter - but I'm doubting the future of my loyalty to the brand amidst all these issues..

Also yes UI lags on the rMBP all over the place - especially Safari, I have 2 rMBP's in front of me both exhibit the same lag on fully loaded machines.. We have both had our machines crash multiple times when working with Adobe/Autocad stuff the last gen MBP could handle easily.

Lack of customer service for such expensive products that aren't cutting it.

Back to Windows.

I've sorta given up on a fix for this. Apple's quality is horrible these days. In some ways, I actually enjoy my experience on Windows 7 via boot camp. Apple hasn't figured out how to make my desktop background persist after reboot, nor has it figured out how to fix the plethora of graphical bugs that plague Safari. I'm not convinced they will tackle a sophisticated issue like streamlined desktop UI performance. The 10.8.2 update did help somewhat, but the way I see it, the improvement is due to speeding up workspace transitions, thus limiting the amount of frames to render. This is more like sweeping the problem under the rug, and they didn't do a good job at that either. This will likely be the last Apple product I buy.

I've actually been experiencing significantly less lag on my machine this past week. Not sure what to attribute it to: I have the latest Nvidia Cuda drivers installed since the weekend and also got the OSX system update sunday.

Sites like ign and twitter are very much lag free now, slight jerk when it's first loading but after the first few seconds I can scroll up and down without any issues. Mission control might have a slight lag once in a while when I havn't used it in a while but once used it's butter smooth with many windows open. Far from the very jerky animations I used to notice.

There are still some noticable issues with the mail app however. The email list on the left is extremely smooth scrolling unlike before, however it's the email contents window (left) that remains very slow and jerky especially with images. Also resizing application windows such as word are very jerky, I get this noticably with Microsoft Word, mail app, safari, etc.

I really think that it's a software/driver issue that will be fixed over time. I'm a lot more satisfied with my OSX experience this week than I was with it for the three weeks before. For thos saying that it's the hardware not capable of such a high resolution... I really don't believe that. Windows 7 works flawlessley at 2880x1800... I took Dishonoured for a spin just for fun and was very playable and looked amazing.

The latest Nvidia Cuda drivers ? Where did you find them please ?

So guys as I promised to inform you about news. I got my rMBP back a few days ago. The SSD is changed and the tecnician installed OSX Lion. And my experience now is that with Lion everything runs smooth comparing to Mountain Lion. Unfortunatelly I hadn't the time yet to test it yet very proparly but I will inform you again after some more tests.

My further tests will be:

1) Testing longer with Lion

2) Backup from TimeMachine with Mountain Lion

and compare.

After that I will post my experience. Indeed I assume that this is some kind of software issue. We will see.

Scrolling and navigation become very very smooth now for me...
