Q: Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

I personally think the UI lagging bug is a serious issue on rMBP because this machine cost $2000 and up and it lags on UI features such as Mission Control and Space Switching while classic Macbook pros don't. I do understand that the retina display models carries a high resolution display, but I think the quad core CPU should have the ability to handle it (please correct me if I am wrong)

I am hoping and asking anyone experiencing the issue to follow up with this thread and post your concerns. Let's hope for a fix soon and we can really enjoy the beauty a Retina Macbook Pro brings to us.

I posted here before regarding a solution offered (delete two files and PRAM reset). It worked for a while. Everything was considerably better. Then lagging started again. I usually have around 10 applications with multiple windows open on each.

Every time I restart my computer, it's fine. I open Mail. It's fine. I open Webkit. It's fine. A few more applications, then it starts lagging.

I did a SMC reset. It looked good afterwards. Maybe I thought so (?)

Then I set "Open in Low Resolution" for some applications including Skype, MS Excel, Contacts, Mail, Activity monitor, etc.. Resolution is not very important for me on those applications.

System feels better than ever now.

Famous "expanding the contacts app window using green (plus) button" works smoothly at last. I now understand how much I missed my old non retina MBP smoothness.

Just wanted to add my voice here aswell, as I am facing the same problems as most of you. Choppiness and lag. I tried playing world of warcraft and I can play with up to 90-100 fps one day, and another day I can play with 10-20 fps. A reboot won´t help at all..

I have the 15-inch with 256GB ssd and 8GB RAM. Retina ofc.

The problem you are discussing is different then what this thread is about. Your problem is caused by the bad EFI update 2.0. You can do an SMC reset which will temporarily fix this problem. This thread is about the lag and choppiness in the UI such as Mission Control.

For the browser the lag problem seems to be finally fixed!

    Check this out:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/6495/latest-webkit-build-doubles-scrolling-perform ance-on-macbook-pro-with-retina-display

And here the direct link to the webkit nightly builds:

    http://www.webkit.org

Now we just have to wait for a solid OSX graphics update for the system user interface and other applications (mission control, mail and so on).

Thanks for that update. Safari works much better on my rMBP and my "test" MB Air.

This also supports my viewpoint that this is very much related to the UI of Mountain Lion and not specifically to the rMBP.

If only Apple releases an update to fix the choppines in Mail and other apps.

It's already been mentioned a few times in the thread that Webkit provides an improved browsing experience, especially in regards to scrolling. However, using as my main browser I'm still experiencing strange graphics glitches now and then.

I have the same issues with my 13 inch retina pro... the UI is anything but snappy or fast, and I'm not talking video editing. Simple tasks like Mission Control, switching between full screen apps, scrolling through mail, etc. - just come with a huge lag. My last machine was a mid 2009 15 inch MBP, I loved it. After the rMBP came out, I thought now it's time to switch. I ordered the 13 inch rMBP with the i5, as I didn't plan to use it for processor heavy tasks. I write and read a lot, so I thought the i5 would do. Wrong! In my opinion the performance of the i5 configuration is a serious joke for a laptop with this price tag. Honestly, if you plan on doing a little scrolling or zooming, get another laptop! On the other hand, I completely fell in love with the build quality of the machine (which is absolutely fantastic) so I decided to take the i5 back to the store and upgrade to the i7. Now, good things first: there is a considerable difference. However, the UI lag is far from gone! I have to say, it makes me kind of sad that Apple throws an extremely high priced laptop on the market (in a presentation full of "Awesome", "Outstanding", "Fantastic", "Georgeous", ...) and the performance - and I want to stress that I'm using my rMBP for reading and writing more than anything - just *****. Sorry to be that blunt. I just can't understand by any means that this machine has made it through product testing and I'm going to say the infamous sentence here: "This would have never happened under ...". Anyway, I hope this thread really get's attention and Apple is working on a fix. After the release of the last WebKit update, which truly bumps Safari performance significantly, there's at least hope that there is one.

Also my voice goes here, too! **** it Apple! I love my RMBP 15" but over 4 months after buying it and still UI lags a lot. On a machine that's powerful enough to outrun Mac Pro in some tests...

Yesterday I've worked on old (!!!) friend's MacBook Pro 17" from 2010. The UI was so unbelievably smooth that I'm really sad now. If OS X wasn't prepared for such high resolution they shouldn't have released Retina MacBook Pros in the first place.

    Same problem here..

Brand new 13" retina MBP arrived today and just scrolling through apples webpage is painful to watch..

My 11" Air works perfectly, so I'm a bit annoyed that I just spent £1600 an a laptop that runs like this..
