Q: Mountain Lion UI Lag on rMBP !!! (Let's Make this thread serious and hope for a fix)

I personally think the UI lagging bug is a serious issue on rMBP because this machine cost $2000 and up and it lags on UI features such as Mission Control and Space Switching while classic Macbook pros don't. I do understand that the retina display models carries a high resolution display, but I think the quad core CPU should have the ability to handle it (please correct me if I am wrong)

I am hoping and asking anyone experiencing the issue to follow up with this thread and post your concerns. Let's hope for a fix soon and we can really enjoy the beauty a Retina Macbook Pro brings to us.

Right now Apple does not say nothing about UI lags and other Retina problems that we are described.

I think 10.8.1 will not resolve our problems but we need solutions.

Over 2k visit on this post...

I spoke with my lower and she said (oh, my lower is my wife really) to call Apple to say problem. In Italy warranty-low is strange (like rest of all) but I think we call Apple to say what are doing to ours rMBP.

They have already seeded developer preview of 10.8.1 and it doesn't focus on graphics. So 10.8.1 isn't going to solve our problems. However, those who are affected by this should give a feedback on www.apple.com/feedback. I did so today after talking with an Apple Technical support staff.

Same issues with my MBP Retina, 8Go. I applied the 10.8.1 update, and no result came.. I called Apple support, and I haven't got any correct reply, so I'm about to re-send my Mac before the end of my retractation period.

What do you think about it? Maybe the machine isn't ready to endure the Retina display power.. I mean, in term of high definition.

I'd return it. I started tech support regarding defective battery life about 3 days before the return window closed, and unfortunately am still battling it now that my window has ended and I can no longer return. They are sending me a replacement, but if I could go back in time, I'd return this in a heartbeat.

    - Degraded battery life after Mountain Lion update

    - Stuttering graphics on workspace transitions (though they seem to improve when I disabled dashboard)

    - Sometimes 20-30 seconds to wake up from sleep mode

Recommendations to reinstall the OS and turn off graphics switching is completely bogus. This is my first Mac after being a PC user for 15 years, and yet it's the worst purchase I've ever made.

FWIW, Retina 15" with 16GB RAM.

I don't think so. When my MBPr was running under Lion, it was really smooth. I didn't have any problem (except minor lags with Safari scrolling).

I think there is a driver problem... and Apple should really correct it...

I will try to make a new partition with Lion, and try it during 2 days. If it's the same way, I will return it.. Stay tuned, I'll do it right now !

I've tried to install ML 2 times, first one as upgrade from Lion to ML and second one fresh installation (totally erase he and partition) no changes for me. Same lags

Ok, I created an USB bootable key with Lion, I created also a new partition to install Lion in dual boot with ML. But, why the Lion installation don't want to launch? It just show me a blank icon, and nothing more..

Just adding my 2 cents here - currently rocking a 2.6Ghz 512GB 8GB Macbook Pro Retina.. My experiences? Mostly amazing - apps load instantly, gaming performance is great, and it's thin and just a beautiful machine. My nitpicks - transition lag when I'm switching from full screen Google Chrome back to desktop or to other full screen apps - there's just this choppiness that occurs at the end of the transition and it looks horrible. My only other complain is the choppy scrolling in content heavy webpages. There should not be any lag, especially since my old Macbook from 2010 can do these tasks without lag.

I just received my Macbook Retina 2.3/16GB Ram and am experiancing UI lag unless the dedicated GPU is engaged.

I am pretty upset about this because even when I turn off the Intel graphics my preferred browser Chrome is choppy as ****.

Same with everyone.. Maybe it's more careful to switch to a MBP Classic 8GB with an opportunity to move on a 2x 8GB RAM and got 16GB at final.. I'm thinking about that, and maybe later, grab a Retina when all will be optimized for.

Received my rMBP 2.6/15/256 yesterday with ML pre-installed. I'm noticing UI lag everywhere, Safari probably the least. After some digging on the internet found this topic : http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1386070&page=13 I did remove the AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext and disabled the Automatic switching of the video cards. Guess what, no more lag... Downside is that the laptop gets extremly hot, so unfortunatly this is not an option. So from these results it seems clear that the current video cards when clocked with a lower frequency, Retina is just too much. Only when you fully use the Geforce on it's normal clockspeed, the lag is gone. Maybe Apple can fiddle a bit with the power states, and also let the CPU render a bit...

Same here, rMBP, 2.3, 8GB, clean install of ML: I experience lags with Mission Control or Expose. I believe these must be software related, because:

    • when I activate MC for the first time after a long time it lags, but if I do it again in a second or so - no lagging at all - just as if some window snapshots were buffered or something
    • exactly the same with Mission Control
    • sometimes I experience minor lag with Launchpad
    • it seems that lags are somehow related to Safari; when I have 10-12 applications open and MC is lagging - closing Safari helps, and reopening Safari brings the problem back

Anyone else getting scroll lag in Mail? It is especially laggy when scrolling through the actual contents of an e-mail. Switching to the dedicated graphics card doesn't seem to make any difference.

Me too. Discrete graphics doesn't seem to help either.
