I got a message when I launched Carbon Copy Cloner that it wanted to access my contacts list
BYE BYE CCC - UNINSTALLED IT
i have lots of apps, and this one was the only one that broke my trust. How many more will there be.
I think you'll find that lots of apps want access to this. Mike Bombich is a stand-up guy and I'm certain he was just using an API for something straightforward that fired up this dialog. I've seen that dialog for almost every application I have. I think you'll find similar soon.
Most apps that do this do this to pre-populate fields for registration or support forms.
CCC is not being nefarious here.

CCC is an essential tool, Mike Bombich has served the Mac community for years and his software has probably saved more projects and careers than any other out there.

My job has very sensative contact information. I do work for some Celebrities. I was concerned.
Why don't he use a profile preference for a registraton file.
I don't know him, but I am sure in the next few weeks, a lot of developers will have a lot of explaining to do.

What is a profile preference?
Really, it could be something simple like you enter your email address and he tries to populate your name to save you some typing. There are literally hundreds of reasons he could be accessing the address book to be helpful, without malicious intent. I've seen that warning dialog from nearly every iWork application, as well as programs like Things (task management), LaunchBar, Alfred, etc.
Thanks for the reassurance, and you are probably right, just would like a heads up when you install an app as to its intentions.

William Kucharski has it right, though: It's asking in order to pre-fill registration fields. This is related to 3rd party application "sandboxing" in 10.8. You can see which apps are using your contacts in Sys Prefs > Security & Privacy > Privacy
If it makes you feel uncomfortable (and it will come up again and again from here on in in OS X), the thing to do is say "No" in the dialogue and continue using CCC and other apps.
