wakeup the MacBook from standby mode the thunderbolt display will not start since the mountain lion update.

you must unplug and replug the connector for starting the display

I think my problem may have been due to Parallels. With the latest Parallels update, it now seems to be working as expected.

    Another thing it does in this exact same scenario, is that if your audio is set to output to Thunderbolt display, even when you come back from sleep and the Thunderbolt display does not turn on, when you play an audio file or any sound from your MBP the audio does not play.  It's as if it's playing to the Display audio, but because it's not "on", nothing is heard.

    I am also experiencing the same issue.  I have a late-2011 15" MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion installed.


    Whenever my laptop goes to sleep and I attempt to wake via my Apple keyboard and/or mouse (both Bluetooth), my Thunderbolt display does not respond.  The only way to make the Thunderbolt display active again is unplugging and then plugging in the Thunderbolt display cable.

    same here

    hit my mac bluetooth keyboard and my thunderbolt display turned on and sound played from the Thunderbolt speakers.

    updated to new os.....

    Now i have to unplug and plug in the display cable!

    The sound will come from my macbook now

    unless i go into setings and change it to the display speakers

    kinda ***** now

    i hope there will be a fix for this!

    i paid good money for this display for it to work like advertised.

    No problem here with a MBPr connected to a thunderbolt display while the notebook is in clamshell mode.  What are your power saving settings I have seen other people mention that turning off "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" does help.

    This is becomming a huge problem to me.  Lost productivity, because I need to readjust all my windows after doing this.  All windows are moved to the small MBP screen.


    We really need a fix here Apple.  This is a huge deal.  I never had issues like this with my Windows hardware, ever.

    I have verified that the "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" option is unchecked.  The problem still exists for me.

    Me too.  I unchecked this option and tried.  There has been no change and the opton has now been unchecked for a week now and no change.  I am extremely dissapointed. 


    How can a release like this break such a fundamental part of the Mac experience for many people.  I've made a very large investment and committment to Apple products over the last year.  My expectations on the level of quality were much higher than what I am experiencing.

    I didn't have any problems until the latest update, but after updating to 10.8.1 I do have a problem.


    I use a Mac Book Pro (earlie 2011) in clamshell mode with a thunderbolt screen en bluetooth apple mouse and keyboard.


    When I wake up my mac with the keyboard or mouse, the screen lights up and shows the login screen. After loging in, The screen goes black. When I open my MBP I get a blue screen there... The MBP is responsive (I can start and stop music etc) but no screen is shown.

    This may not necessarily answer your question.  But I did notice my problem going away after a I did a "clean" install of OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1 onto my new SSD.

    Yeah, I didn't want to do a re-install.  But since I was replacing my 500 GB hard drive with a 256 GB SSD, I wanted to see if a clean install would make a difference.  In my case it did.  But there could have been other factors that were contributing to the problem when I originally installed OS X Mountain Lion.  From the various discussion boards, it looks like we were not the only ones experiencing the same issue.

    I had the same problem with my new MacBook Pro Retina connected to a new Thunderbolt Display running OS 10.8.2. I did resolve the problem after a week or so of troubleshooting, but it did involve getting a resplacement display from Apple.


    Here WAS my situation: After connecting the display and having things work (video and external keyboard/mouse and sound/video), when the computer went to sleep (not display sleep, computer sleep) or when it was re-started via the display, I had video but did not have any other external control or display sound/video (was as if the internal hub of the TD was not working).


    When I disconnected the Thunderbolt connector (which comes from the "All-in-One" TD cable) from the computer and then plugged in a regular Thunderbolt cable to the computer port and the empty TD Thunderbolt port, all was well. In other words I left the TD Thunderbolt connector disconnected and bypassed it with another Thunderbolt cable between the computer and the TD display port. Note that I left the power connector from the "All-in-One" cable connected as there was no problem with that portion.


    This, of course meant that the Thunderbolt part of the All-in-One cable (which is not unpluggable from the display) was bad or the display electronics leading to it was bad. Either way it required a new or repaired display.


    I hope this is helpful. After bypassing the All-in-One Thunderbolt interface with my workaround above, I never had the problem occur again (you could command the computer to sleep or re-start it from the display, remove the laptop to use elsewhere, re-connect it, etc. and everything continued to work without fiddling with any connections). As a result, I had Apple replace the display under warranty provisions.
