Mountain Lion no Wifi after wake from sleep

Okay it seems after 2 days of testing that I have resolved the issue. The only thing is I am not sure what the fix was. I will list what I did and perhaps somebody can confirm what worked for them.

I only had the sleep issue at work not at home. The two big differences bettween my home and work environment are different wi-fi networks and at work I have a time machine drive. The time machine drive is a western digital and it puts a icon in my task bar when it is connected.

Here are the things I did to fix it:

1) At work I deleted the default wifi from perfered networks (we have two networks and now I log into the second)

2) I removed all non apple taskbar icons (I do have the wi-fi control active)

I had google drive, some vmware thingy, transmit and wd smartware (western digital's taskbar thingy).

One thing I will try is to connect to the old wifi network to see if that has anything to do with it.

I also have a Time Machine drive, but it's not on most of the time, so I know that's not an issue for me. I also only have one preferred network, so that, too, is unlikely the problem. I think that the non-Apple taskbar icons might be the problem, since your wifi icon is on and you're not having a problem with it. Will be interested to see if reconnecting to old network recreates the problem. I'd guess not.

Curious if the latest OS update (10.8.2) has had any positive impact on this issue? Please post if you've got something to share.

Having read this forum (18 pages so far) here is what I am about to try:

1. Delete all known wifi networks from Network Preferences. In your keychain, remove anything referring to "

Airport network password".

2. Stop using Bluetooth.

3. Stop using Wifi.

4. Stop using WEP.

5. reinstall OS X.

6. Stop using Transmit.

7. Stop using Parallels.

8. Stop using iStat, Disk Menus and anything else that uses Bonjour. In fact... just stop using Bonjour.

9. Stop using LittleSnitch.

10. Switch router channels if you ignored step 3.

11. Stop using energy saving.. Just never sleep.

12. Stop using Safari.

13. Stop using DropBox.

14. Remove anything refering to the above from LaunchAgents/, or LaunchDaemons/ from the system folder or from the home folder.

15. Delete your user account, and create a new one (e.g., the Admin account).

16. Delete all the networking plists in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

17. Continue loving my Mac... and hope this problem doesn't infect *more* than one of my machines.

Well I installed the 10.8.2 update yesterday. After installation there was some kind of facebook icon in the menu bar. Some kind of tab but I do not know how it got there.

Then I had to use Safari quite intensively (refreshing several web pages, opening/close other web pages) and suddenly there the problem was again. Safari froze and in the end I had to do a hard reboot.

This morning, after wake up from sleep mode, after refreshing again some web pages again Safari froze.

I did not see the spinning beach ball in all the previous occasions.

After doing a hard reboot again I tried to remove all the none original apple icons from the menu bar.

With some I succeeded, but 2 others are persistently remaining there.(Speedtools and Intego net update)

Don't know how to get rid of them, some help with this is welcome.

Well it looks like the new update certainly did not help any, maybe worsened matters.

I have not had this WiFi issue since updating to OS X 10.8.2. I'm glad to be done with this issue (or so I hope).

I don't think you need to do all of that. My problem has been resolved for a week now. I'm not sure what did it but I did these 2 things:

1) Removed all third party taskbar icons. In many cases that ment turning them off in login items

2) Deleting my wifi network preference and re logging in.

Like I said not sure wich one worked. As a matter of fact I have turned back on some of the third party task bar icons and I'm still good.

what I'd like to add is that problem only persists with cheap hotspots and routers, though no complaints about AirPort or Cisco (+Linksys).

+1, I have no problems with Cisco at work, though won't rejoin my home Asus router after waking up 😟

I wonder what's the difference between those 😕

@aqnguyen87, Thank You so much, I had been searching for a solution forever. I thought it was Mountain Lion, But I just bought a new SSD and installed it on that so it was a compound problem for me, I have not tried the solution yet. But I am sure this will fix it. I didnt realize SSDs even had firmware.

I'm still not convinced this is a router problem per se, given what I've read. If it is connected, in part, with the router, then I would have a complaint with my (older) AEBS (bought in January 2006). I think Andrew Harris is onto something, i.e., most likely third party taskbar icons (and less likely wifi network preference issue.... though the fact that he's re-added some of the menu icons w/o consequence does give me pause).

I filed a bug report and got back a response with a rather lengthy request to use Terminal, etc. to futher verify the issue wuth logs, etc. I haven't had time to work on it and this weekend will not be able to either. It will have to wait.

Wouldn't it be nice if Apple simply let us know more specifically what each update accomplishes/addresses? If they did address this issue, it's not there in the issues they say this update addresses.

My question to you, ck2875, is did you do anything else to resolve this issue besides performing the update?

Well I updated Mountain Lion to 10.8.2 and it's still dropping WiFi.

I removed all the 3rd party icons from the menu bar. It did not help any. I still get freezes in Safari ,Mail, Sys. Pref. . Actually al programs that I start after the first freeze do not work or causes spinning beach balls.

Only hard reboot will help.I had it working pretty well for 4 days and than after the 10.8.2 update it got worse than it ever was before.

Now I have stopped the sleeping mode setting completely( setting: never), and will see how that works.
