OS9 emulator for Intel Macs?

Since apparently classic environment will simply not run on the new Intel Macs, anyone know of any plans to create an OS9 emulator that would allow old programs to run on them? Seems like it would have more than enough power to do at least basic classic stuff.

CrackBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.5), I love my CrackBook

Allan,

I might disagree about the Infocom adventures. They were simple text adventures, written to Apple's HIG (Human interface Guidelines), and apart from a few that had some colour, they only used Apple's standard windowing routines, which any OS9 emulator would have to have spot on.

I really recommend the original poster looks at the new version of Word, or at least find a copy of AppleWorks 6 to do their word processing. I remember WP3.5.1, it was OK, but you'd have to be desperate to want to use it on a whizzy new Mac. Especially now there are so many shareware and freeware titles that could blow WP3.5.1 away.

First off, you can run those old Infocom games directly in OS X! Check out a program called "Zoom": http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14763

Secondly, there are plenty of OS X word processors you can choose from other than Word. Mellel, OpenOffice, Nisus Writer Express, Pages, Papyrus...

That being said, if you really want to stick with OS 9 apps, there are people working on ways to run Classic on an Intel through emulation. Check out Sheepshaver at http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/

Joe-

After I made the switch to OS X I didn't want to spend the money for Office and wanted better import/export flexibility than Apple Works permitted.

I tried Open Office and found it too slow. I found AbiWord to my liking. I also liked Mariner Write.

Mariner Write can't open Wordperfect directly but only after saving WP as an RTF file. However, I can open WP 3.5 files with AbiWord and I've never experienced any font or formating incompatabilities.

AbiWord is open source. Mariner Write cost $49.95 or the Mariner Write/Calc Pak is $89.95.

I'm more satisfied using these two word processors than any other word processing app(s) since I began using a Mac in 1988.

I think an honorable mention goes to FlySuite, but as far as I know, it doesn't work in Mac OS 9 because of a certain higher level of Java is required. They are basically a Java - Cross-Platform application that runs in the modern OS's, browsers, and is CPU independent. Both seems to blend right in using the OS's built in GUI as well.

Well— my 2 cents worth.

Parallels is definately NOT like Virtual PC. Parallels is a virtualization approach that runs on top of the "real" hardware in an Intel mac. It is NOT emulation, which pretends to be hardware it is not. Parallels requires an intel processor with virtualization support and is not really a solution for an OS9 EMULATOR... something that pretends it is a "PowerPC" processor.
