How to add favicons to Safari's bookmark bar?

I am new to mac, but is there a way add favicons to Safari's bookmark bar like chrome does?

It is taxing to have to read through bookmarks instead of an image/favicon.

This worked for me: running Yosemite on retina MBP. Thanks!

So it's 4 1/2 years after the OP and STILL no favicons in tabs. I am greedy. I have favicons on my favorites bar AND in tabs on Chrome. I really want to use Safari more, but the lack of favicons, especially when I have a dozen tabs open, makes it a no-go for me.

C'mon, Apple, when are you going to add this basic functionality to Safari? It's too frustrating.

Hi Adam,

Yesterday I began attempting to wean myself from Firefox because of its resource hoggy nature, jerky video playback, and some other problems I was having with it on my MacBook Pro. I stumbled on your question in trying to answer my own. In migrating to Safari, I had the same concern as you regarding favicons. My eyes like them much better than just text for quickly locating the tab I want!

After some searching, I found the Safari extension Glims. It has a number of features, some of which you might not like or need. During the installation process, you'll be given an option to choose a "lite" version if you like. Favicons are included in the lite version, if you prefer to skip all the other bells and whistles. I've installed the full version and am playing with it. So far, I'm liking it. I wonder if you might like it, too.

This is a free-to-download, Creative Commons licensed project. Pretty cool. Find it here: http://www.machangout.com/

I checked Apple support site before I posted that answer.

I could not find a howto for adding a website icon to the Bookmarks Bar itself.

If you add a folder to the Bookmarks Bar, you can place bookmarks in it.

Those bookmarks will have site specific favicons, if you visit those sites often.

There are some folders added to the Bookmarks by default like Popular,News, etc.

I was aware that there are third party apps that will add favicons to the Bookmarks Bar.

I do not use any of them. They may not cause any trouble. But I am not sure.

Best.

I just rename the bookmarks I use most often to something short, preferably one letter. So the bar displays "f" instead of "facebook", "WA" instead of "Wolfram Alpha" etc. Really cleans up the clutter and makes things easy to find. I kinda like the fact that the bar is all text and not a row of colorful, distracting icons.
