Q: Wifi freezes Mountain Lion (especially with Safari it seems)

Upgraded my MBP6,2 to Mountain Lion and I have an odd problem: when (I have Safari open and) I want to change my wifi-connection to another network,

the wifi icon in the menu bar displays searching for another network

then the clock in the menu bar freezes (I have seconds being displayed)

the wifi icon, which still indicates searching, freezes

most programs keep running, except for Safari, which becomes unresponsive

in the 'forces stop'-windows just Safari is not responsing, Finder appears to be responding according to the displyed information

The only way to solve this is to restart, wait for until the computer is fully restarted, select the network you want and then start Safari.

Any one familiar with this, wha

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

@TwoCoke - I use AppCleaner to remove programs that don't have uninstallers (and sometimes those that do), but I don't think you need to uninstall it to avoid the problem - just don't leave it running when your machine sleeps.  I've not noticed the lockup except for when it's waking and tries to reconnect to the network.  I'm going to run some more tests today because I use Transmit almost every day.

I have this same problem on a 12,2 (2011) iMac. I also have Transmit installed. I opened Transmit and there was an update I hadn't applied yet. One of the fixes noted was an issue with the Transmit Disk menu (which is the Transit icon in the menu bar). I decided to keep Transmit active with the new update and see if the problem reasserts itself. I'll keep you posted.

I already had the Transmit menu bar icon turned off prior to upgrading to ML, so that likely won't help...

    This perfectly fits my issues.

Will try and keep Transmit off for a while.

I did as well, and pointed them to this thread, asking them to confirm or deny the issue with their own testing.  Hopefully they'll respond to our request soon.  I love Transmit!

I have the same problem: beachball over the wifi, battery and the clock which is frozen but internet and wifi still working: I don't have transmit, or Littel snithc but do have istats. Not sure what this is and why any of these woudl conflict. Maybe somethign else?

Any advice appreciated as it is annoying

Ah with me, internet and wifi stop working.

Sounds like you might have a different issue Jon.

have you tried this possible solution? https://discussions.apple.com/message/19080336#19080336

Thanks for that: my problem seems to be different to everyone's:

    • wifi working fine
    • internet (safari) working fine
    • Cannot access wifi, battery status, volume nor the clock, which has frozen. from bar
    • Can access notifications
    • Can acess system preferences
    • Everything else OK and can access apps etc.

I do occasionally get the screen blacked out but cursor is present, espeically after a sleep: takes up to a minute for screen to reappear.

More annoying then detrimental; think software issue with the update as seem to be threads of similar issues across the different array of macs: I also see this on my macbook air. I currently am on a macbook pro mid 2012, 2.3GHz, 4GB memory, 750GB HD.

exact same situation here, adding to that, i have to force stop all hanging programs before I can reboot/logout, and even then have to use the power button to close my macbookpro.

gonna quit transmit for now, but did realize now i had not registered it yet, being out of the evaluation-time. Don't use it that often, and had not since installing ML.

    greets,

    Marius

OK guys.. I ran for 3 days without any problems so long as Transmit was off.  Yesterday, I forgot and left it open, machine went to sleep, and the lockup scenario returned.  Definitely appears to be Transmit related.

Haven't heard back from Panic yet.. going to bump them again.  I'll report back if I hear anything.

I've been all over the forums and tried may solutions to the crashing on wake from a deep sleep. This is the first thread to suggest that possibly Transmit or Transmit Disk is the cause. Usually when I have to perform a hard restart, no crash report is generated, but this is what happened earlier:

Switched networks from open network to home network via WiFi menu and it showed an ! in the icon and wouldn't connect. Then the menu bar froze, mainly Bluetooth, Wifi, etc., system icons, but Notification Center still worked. Panic Software's Transmit Disk was frozen too and the then every application I accessed started to freeze. I could interact with an app for maybe one second, then beach balls for all apps.

This is almost the identical behavior I've seen with daily crashes that don't generate crash reports and require a hard restart. When my computer wakes from a deep sleep, the Wifi menu acts like it's connecting, then the same thing happens as above. I've tried a lot of different things, such as:

    Reinstalling Mountain Lion

    Deleting and adding networks

    Deleting and adding Bluetooth devices

    Reseting SMC

    Reseting PRAM

    Repair Permissions

    Repair Disk

None of these seem to help. I'm now inclined to think it could be related to Transmit Disk, as when I tested going in and out of a deep sleep, the computer resumed normally. Once I reenabled Transmit Menu and switched networks, this crash occurred.

    Here's the crash report:
