Q: Wifi freezes Mountain Lion (especially with Safari it seems)

I had the same thing today: they recommended the fix for this was to format my drive, reinstall Mountain lion and then reinstall all of my files from time machine....figured not the way forward quite yet.

I don't have coda, transmit, or the other programmes mentioned so far and have the same thing. See earlier thread.

Lets see what apple come up with as they are reading this thread.

@jonwildvet - Do you have these EXACT symptoms?

1) Mountain Lion is the OS.

2) Mac goes to sleep.

3) On waking, Mac tries to connect to network, fails, then the top right section of the menu bar beachballs when you roll over it.

4) Mail and Calendar both lock up (due to network failure)

5) Opening System Preferences locks up when trying to open Network.

6) Only restarting will resolve the issue.

There are several types of lockups being reported... but this one is pretty unique and seems to involve Transmit specifically.

I had problems with Safari crashing in Mountain Lion, clicked on the Safari (next to the Apple), clicked reset Safari and my problem went away.  Hope this helps someone.

I received a call from an Apple technician tonight regarding this issue.  They have been monitoring this thread and they consider this a priority item, so that's encouraging.  He ran some tests and took some diags from my MBP which are going to their support engineers for diagnosis.

One thing we did find out that I hadn't noticed before was that Safari definitely needs to be in memory for the lockup to happen.  Just sleeping with Transmit alone didn't lock up upon waking.

Hopefully they'll find an fix soon!

I'm curious if hardware makes a difference.  I'm running a Macbook Pro, 15-inch, Early 2011 (8,2).  Can everyone else who's having this exact problem please share your model numbers?

Scratch my last post (won't let me edit for some reason).  I found another thread about this issue and iMacs are having the same troubles.  They also narrowed it down to Transmit, and some have found some success.  I'm going to mess with it a bit and will report back.  Here's the other thread:

OK.. I'm pleased to announce that this solution worked for me on a second try.  Here's what I did:

1) Under Transmit preferences, I check the box that says "Show Transmit Disk in menu bar" (I was not enabled previously, except in my first try).

2) Shut down Transmit

3) Run Transmit again, and uncheck the box.

4) Shut down Transmit again (just to be sure it took).

5) Ran Transmit, put computer to sleep, and voila - no problem.  Put it to sleep again, and still no problem.

So.. shutting down Transmit after checking the box seemed to make a difference for me.

I'll notify Apple and Panic about this development.  Hope this works for you guys too!

Ive just tried this, and it appears to have worked on my imac,  everytime i noticed this issue it was after sleeping for a longer period of time, so i will check back tomorrow with my findings. Fingers crossed though.

I only use Chrome and It's been doing it constantly. 

I had talked to Apple and they say the make date of Your Mac has nothing to do with it.  I kind of agree since people with the new Retina display are also having the issue.

Right, after speaking to someone from apple earlier, and being completely unable to replicate the problem while he was on the phone, i seem to be gettimg somewhere.

What i have found is:

My machine needs to be 'asleep' for more than 10 minutes for the lockup to happen. If i only sleep for a minute or two, it seems to start up and reconnect to wifi without any issues.

Every time it has locked up so far i have been connected to and ftp server on sleep and the transmit disk icon has been in the menu bar.

Ive got sysreports from the time of the lockups and theyve been sent over to apple, so hopefully we should be able to shed some light on what is causing the issue soon.

Im am currently in the process (waiting 10 minutes) of trying to see if system will lockup when transmit disk is not in the  menu bar and im not connected to ftp. i.e. transmit being the only open app and not being connected to the internet.

(it also appears that toggling the transmit icon in the menu bar isnt solving the issue for me after all, (or at least not while still having it in the menu bar, it might work when removed from the menu bar, (thats kinda what im testing now..). will report my findings back here.)

ive also replicated the issue without safari or any web browser running at time of sleep. So dont know if that is relevant.

Ok, here is my update, i got transmit to lockup like this.

booted my MBP (though i think device is irrelivant) opened transmit (with no transmit disk in the menubar) then instantly slept my machine, (didn't connect to any ftp servers, literally just opened the app, i do not have any mounted disks or anything, literally just opened and then slept)

Left my machine for exactly 10 minutes, came back to it, logged back into my machine and it locked up.

No other apps were opened at any time other than mail.

Sent sysdiagnosis and informed apple, so this seems to be as conclusive as i can get to the cause of the issue.

Hopefully they'll be aboe to work out the issue now.

Thanks a bunch for this info.  I've not let it sleep for more than a few seconds, so apparently that makes a difference.  I can lock mine up in that short time if I have Safari and Transmit in memory (prior to toggling Transmit Disk, anyway).

As you said.. hopefully that makes it conclusive.  Panic is claiming they are having a hard time duplicating the issue, but are working on it.  Also said that other "Rendevous" apps were having issues as well, whatever that means...
