Q: Wifi freezes Mountain Lion (especially with Safari it seems)

I'll try to sample configd and kill it next time.

This has happened twice today. The Transmit menu item has been disabled, but it seems to make no difference.

I don't know who needs to fix this first, but it seems like Apple should ensure that this one app can't take down the OS. Is Transmit sandboxed? Needs to be - we've paid for this application, and some of us (like me) did so because it's really useful in our day to day work.

I'm not sure what to do at this point.

I was having the same problem but instead of disabling Transmit I disabled the configd file and so far so good. I wonder if Panic is going to fix this on the next update.

Oh sorry. From the previous page. Open up Activity Monitor, click on All Processes, then search for "configd" and terminate the process.

I submitted this to Panic and they say they are working on the problem, but I would recommend that anyone having this problem should file a bug report with Panic at http://www.panic.com/transmit/support.html

Hmm I just stumbled onto something interesting.

Along with the wifi freezing I was also getting a lot of wifi disconnects. I would stay connected for 2-5 min tops before I would disconnect and have to turn Wi-Fi on and then off again. Since disabling "configd" I have also stopped disconnecting.

What exactly does configd do?

I believe configd keeps track of 'dynamic configuration data' such as what drives are connected, and other things. Not entirely sure what all it covers.

So odd. I wonder if it was transmit or the configd that was killing my wi-fi connection too. Have any of you guys noticed a steady connection now?

Hah, well, configd keeps respawning. Are you sure it's not running?

Yeah its respawning for me too. Does disabling it just force it to restart and that fixes the issue?

I don't really believe that simply restarting configd "fixes" this issue...

Ill tell you what fixed it for me was getting the Airport Extreme. No issues with anything now.

Since updating to OS X 10.8.1, I've been using Transmit and letting the computer sleep. So far, no crashes.

I have seen it unfortunately. With 10.8.1 and Transmit 4.2.

The menubar option was disabled, but Transmit was running. WiFi was on.

Thus far I have only seen this issue under the following conditions:

1. WiFi on

2. Transmit running or menubar option enabled

BTW, I am able to restart the machine using the keyboard shortcut (Cmd-Ctrl-Eject). This is probably a better option than hard restarting by holding the power button.
