Q: Sound stuttering after Mountain Lion install

Dear community,

after having installed OSX Mountain Lion my sound startet stuttering whenever there is rapid movement on my screen.

This includes e.g. window movement, scrolling through image loaded websites or video playback (flash player, quicktime).

A restart didn't help. I'm using stereo output, not digital.

I have connected a second monitor but the problem persists after disconnecting it. Movement on the second monitor also causes the sound to stutter.

My GPU Diode temperature is at 85°C (there is some bug that keeps the GPU under load while a second monitor is connected AFAIK), but I guess it was the same under Snow Leopard.

In Snow Leopard the sound output was always perfect even under heavy load or heavy HDD I/O.

Any ideas?

What type of iMac are you using?

My iMac (2011, 27", 3.1GHz) has "only" Audio-Stuttering, no crashes or something else. I can work with my iMac, but I cannot use eyeTV or watch movies because of the stuttering (every 5 minutes one stutter).

So there seems to be different levels of "Audio-Stuttering"?

When I reinstall via recovery drive, can I use time machine to backup my data?

I've got 2011 27" iMac Quad Core 3.4GHz 16GB RAM 2GB Video.  Top spec. No way it should struggle.  Well, it didn't struggle...until I installed Mountain Lion.

Time Machine completely sh*fted too.  Worked perfectly on Snow Leopard and Lion, but it now appears if the iMac crashes when it's backing up then it cannot recommence the backup when the system reboots.  I'm using MyBook Live as a backup drive (which is a bit rubbish anyway) but have had to restore to factory settings twice BECAUSE OF THE SHAMBLES OF MOUNTAIN LION.

I now have a operating system that could kill my machine at any moment and NO backup.

I did not erase my hard drive. I just reinstalled the OS. So I did not use my Timemachine backup.

Go to system preferences. Select the Users & Groups tab. Now select the Login items. Remove everything in the login items. see if that helps.

So is this your problem: http://www.networkworld.com/columnists/2012/081312-gearhead.html ?

Do you have any additional hardware connected via usb/firewire/tunderbolt?

And you can try what Carlo TD said.

I am just trying to help. I would like to see everyone get this fixed. I do not have a problem.

So if you reinstall the system no data is deleted? That's easy. I should try that.

Jazzman thank you so much for your tip!

After reinstalling Mountain Lion via Recovery Disc everything seems to be fine!

Now I can play Minecraft and listen to music (eyeTV radio) at the same time without any stutters^^

The installation was not easy, since my iMac interpreted my German keyboard as an US-keyboard, so he made this funny token instead of a "@":

    IMG_1257.JPG

So I opened Safari, copied the "@" from google and pasted it into the textfield (and of course the special characters for my password).

After all I noticed the little flag in the right corner, which is for changing the keyboard-language^^

I hope the stutter will not return.

After playing Minecraft and Xonotic with eyeTV-background music for 1h now, no lagging, yet!

This is such a great feeling to walk through the Minecraft-world fluently without lagging (and backgound-music without stuttering).

    …this evening I'll watch a video. That'll be great^^

My three minutes of joy have been replaced with half an hour of annoyance.  iTunes sounds terrible, still stuttering all over the place.

Just waiting for it to crash now - never thought I'd say that of an Apple desktop machine.
