Q: Sound stuttering after Mountain Lion install

Dear community,

after having installed OSX Mountain Lion my sound startet stuttering whenever there is rapid movement on my screen.

This includes e.g. window movement, scrolling through image loaded websites or video playback (flash player, quicktime).

A restart didn't help. I'm using stereo output, not digital.

I have connected a second monitor but the problem persists after disconnecting it. Movement on the second monitor also causes the sound to stutter.

My GPU Diode temperature is at 85°C (there is some bug that keeps the GPU under load while a second monitor is connected AFAIK), but I guess it was the same under Snow Leopard.

In Snow Leopard the sound output was always perfect even under heavy load or heavy HDD I/O.

Any ideas?

I dunno guys, a couple hours now...I'm still "snap crackle and pop" free after this weirdly titled "supplemental update".

I talked to one of the guys the engineering team asked to call people on this forum and submit their system data.  Anyway, he said the engineers are "working hard on a fix" but couldn't give me any meaningful data.  Nor would anyone from apple be posting on these threads to let us know they are working on it.  Instead, I get a answer that apple has sooo many computer types to maintain.  I'm sorry, ML covers about 4 generations of of iMacs at the most. So that's 4 computers.  Multiply this times their other lines and they have maybe 20 lines and models total.  With 12,000 employees I'd think this would be a no brainer.  Microsoft seems to do alright despite their dated looking OS.  But at least they can play iTunes!

...nevermind, "supplemental updated" didn't do jack, still clicks/pops when I tried to do some recording today.  I'm going to have to subway into a nearby store and force a copy of Lion out of their greedy hands.  All I got is Snow Lep and I need the syncing capabilities of Lion.  The adventure continues.

Carlo, Thank you for your suggestions but I would like to clarify the issue of what the problem really is and I will try to make it is as simple as possible:

The issue is with "Mountain Lion" is not certain apps or particular system settings. There have been thousands, repeat thousands of iMacs, MacBooks, Mac Pros and MacBook Pros which worked perfectly under Mac OS X 10.7 a.k.a. "Lion."

When thousands of Mac users upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8 a.k.a "Mountain Lion" the Video, Audio and overall system performance was degraded severely to where users could not properly perform simple tasks with their Macs.

Carlo, you can go on and on making random comments about what might fix it or what might be the problem is but it's just wasting peoples time pretty much.

Apple introduced this "bug" in Mac OS X 10.8 which has affected thousands of Macs in various flavors... end of story. They need to fix it whether it be an "working update" to 10.8 Mountain Lion or a hardware fix such as a new Mac which can run Mac OS X 10.8 a.k.a Mountain Lion correctly, period.

That logic would hold if everyone wth the exact same machines had the same problem. I believe Apple does test the software on a multidude of machines. This seems very random. It is either hardware related or software related. If it is hardware, it might be because something has changed, i.e. more power usage, warmer tempertures, particles causing static or fluctuations in power useage... etc, if it is software related, it should be easier to fix; it could be as simple as corupt prefernces, or as difficult as incapatiblity of some hardware with the new software, third party software that is causing a conflict, a simple plug-in that is causeing the problem, or even something as severe as something becoming magnetized that should not be magnetized and now the software is not working the way it suppose to.  There are many possibilties. My last post was only to show the people that someone had a problem and used both a command in terminal and did something with the preferences and their dilema was resolved. I do not know if it either of those things relate to your dilema.

I really don't see the difference in the way they do business frankly.  I have had bugs with my other macs that never got resolved.  As I had mentioned I think in a previous post, I have a 2007 iMac.  Many like me have noticed the graphics drivers cause freezing since 10.6.3!  The only fix with any newer OS is to do a bit of a hack by installing the kext files from 10.6.2 after each update.  Very frustrating to say the least.

I'm just praying this bug with the audio stutter affects enough people to force APple to get a fix out.  With my old iMac I gathered only some users with older rev's of the graphics card had a problem, so that there weren't enough ppl out there to have apple/amd fix the problem.  Note that on that computer it runs fine on the older os or with windows xp.

Campbell, thank you, even though what they are doing ought to be illegal I need to get a legit copy since I use it for my business.

Selling the stock ain't a bad idea, that's the only language they hear.  I bought the stock at $85 when they had a bright future and have been a crazy apple fan (because their stuff worked, no other reason).  But little things like this aren't isolated incidents, it shows a change in the way they do things, and as an investor important to take into account.  It wouldn't surprise me at all if in five years they had completely destroyed the trust Jobs built and the stock price was hosed.  Good short.

People always ask why are apple fans so crazy loyal.  Well it's because their stuff works, period.  Once the stuff no workie, no fans, that simple.

How can they not do a proper test with real people in the field, testing on real machines?  I noticed this bug within 1 minute of running the new system.  They either 1) knew about it and didn't care or 2) are incompetent and didn't know about it.

The cause has to be software - it may only trigger problems in certain hardware revs, but it doesn't take much deductive reasoning to see that if you add ML on certain machines the problem will crop up.

Whatever your opinion on the above, it's just semantics.  The problem is somewhat widespread, and it seems that quite a few sophisticated users have tried (and failed) to fix it on their own.  You've been posting on this thread for a long time, and I think you've been unable to help us fix the issue.  At this moment it's more frustrating to read your suggestions than simply venting about the problem.  And I don't mean any offense, I think you are trying to be helpful.  I just don't think this one is a simple "do this to your computer" fix.

I wish we had a better idea as to the logic boards in these machines.  If one is made by foxconn, asus, gigabyte, etc.  Also, if the newer iMacs that you could say go buy from an Apple store today would exibit these same issues.

I don't suppose anyone that has posted on this thread has purchased a iMac recently from apple that is having this issue?

No but I've thought about going to the local apple store, hopping on youtube and seeing if I could replicate the issue with one of the floor models.

I dunno guys, I dropped mine off today at the apple store for them to run tests on it. I want a new one, it's a brand new retina display macbook and it has audio problems from week #1. My brother bought one the same day as me, and his has had no audio issues. We can blame Mountain Lion all we want but the audio issue isn't uniform.

I suspect it's hardware related. It's only on the Intel graphics card, and the intel graphics card itself for me I find to be a poor performer - animated gifs are choppy, safari has graphic anomalies when surfing the web, etc. but everything is fine on dedicated graphics.

After going around in circles on their support website without being able to find a real human I finally was able to get the system to allow me to open a case. Now I have to wait another 48hrs it says before a real human contacts me.

Requesting they give me a Lion install disk (and I'm working in Asia for overnight it please) to get off this nightmare buggy system and get back to work. I'm not going to wait for them to fix ML and I'm not going back to SL because I need my devices in sync, and I'm not paying any more money for Lion or anything else. They need to get me a legit copy of Lion.

We'll see what happens, this is so ridiculous and supremely frustrating.

They won't give you one.  I asked for one repeatedly over two months.  They said they didn't have anymore.  Kind of like I don't have anymore money for Macs.  Kinda sad, isn't it?  =)
