Q: Sound stuttering after Mountain Lion install

Dear community,

after having installed OSX Mountain Lion my sound startet stuttering whenever there is rapid movement on my screen.

This includes e.g. window movement, scrolling through image loaded websites or video playback (flash player, quicktime).

A restart didn't help. I'm using stereo output, not digital.

I have connected a second monitor but the problem persists after disconnecting it. Movement on the second monitor also causes the sound to stutter.

My GPU Diode temperature is at 85°C (there is some bug that keeps the GPU under load while a second monitor is connected AFAIK), but I guess it was the same under Snow Leopard.

In Snow Leopard the sound output was always perfect even under heavy load or heavy HDD I/O.

Any ideas?

I'm seeing others with macbooks, older iMacs, and the new macbook pros saying they have the issue.  So it's obviously strictly software related.  It has to be component manufacturer differences, aka, ML has drivers that work for some logic board brands and other boards aren't fully supported.

Almost a quarter of a year that ML has been out and we are still waiting.  Patience has run out.

Just started a restore from my time capsule back to Lion 10.7.4.  I've lost all faith in apple.  Garbage company.

Restore is completed.  Making a few updates to bring the machine back to where it was before.  But so far an hour and the machine is working like a charm!  Lion = Win  Mountain Lion = Fire the OSX Dev team.  Much happier now!

I'm doing a clean reinstall this whole weekend on all computers to roll back. :(

I realized I own Lion on my MacBook Pro, BUT it only came with Snow Lep install disc!!  Because Lion is all ethereal now and can't even be downloaded. So I can't even get a copy of what I own! I called apple and they don't care and won't give me a copy. Obviously they planned all this years back. They are so infuriating. It's one thing to have a master plan. Another thing to have a master plan that DOESN'T WORK that you stick to ridgedly.

I really need a Lion install DVD.  I own it.  If anyone still has an image they can Dropbox me.

    Moog,

10.7.3, dated 7 Feb 2012 on my system. 4.07 GB. I don't use it anymore because that system is not so essential and will continue to run OS X Devon Rex (as I now call it), so you can have my redundant Lion. Contact me at istrain@mo-fu.net and we'll take it from there.

Edit: I'm just uploading a zipped copy of the app folder now to some web space. It's huge and will take about 12 hours on my ADSL.

I've been back on lion for the majority of the day today.  I can say that it is running without audio stutters now.  Glad I can use the computer again.  This will also be my last Apple computer.  Good job Apple, you succeeded.

You should now reinstall Mountain Lion to test your hypotheses and see if there are any problems in Mountain Lion. (I think it would be very interesting to hear the results.)

Carlo, you and I both know the answer.  It's been stated by others in threads on here that it does come back when you install Mountain Lion.  And since Apple refunded my money for Mountain Lion, why in the world would I ever give them a cent more for that pice of junk.  So I don't have notifications, messages, and social networking integration. Those features are silly little add ons that have absolutely no value.  Mountain Lion should have been an incremental update to Lion, not a new OSX release.

New feature for 10.9 will be what they put in 10.8, but it will actually work.  Other new features will be a curser on screen that remains a beachball and won't let you click on things coupled with silent mode.  Silent mode will have your compter shut its fans off so it can overheat and make your hardware fail.

In all seriousness, revert if you can.  Otherwise, keep hammering apple.  I'm more excited to put windows on my macs now than anything.  This was the last straw for me and I'll never come back.

Barrett, I'm with you. This would be my last Mac Pro. I could not beleive this OS caused so much problems to Apple customers. From disk crash, slowness... etc.... waist a lot of time.

Sometimes the only way to speak to a company is with your wallet.  Perhaps when they have to let some staff go because the customers just aren't buying like they used to they will wake up.  But I doubt this.  They are so arrogant and self absorbed they would probably rather run the company into the ground than admit fault.  Who knows, maybe we are typing on the keyboard wrong and that's why it is happening...

Apple doesn't read these board. The boards are for users to discuss and help each other out.

Use the feedback page if you want to give feedback.

BTW for users that have trouble with audio stuttering in VLC, try COMPLETELY uninstalling VLC - I used Forklift but AppCleaner should work too. Make sure you nuke all the config files. Then download and reinstall VLC. No idea what is going on but it appears to work for me.

Just thought I'd add that Apple do read these forums. They contacted me following up on the comments I posted on here using the contact details associated to my account

Use both methods to raise the issues - forums and feedback forms. Posting issues on here helps promote just how serious the problem is and highlights how poor Apple's QA test team were in this instance.
