Q: Sound stuttering after Mountain Lion install

Dear community,

after having installed OSX Mountain Lion my sound startet stuttering whenever there is rapid movement on my screen.

This includes e.g. window movement, scrolling through image loaded websites or video playback (flash player, quicktime).

A restart didn't help. I'm using stereo output, not digital.

I have connected a second monitor but the problem persists after disconnecting it. Movement on the second monitor also causes the sound to stutter.

My GPU Diode temperature is at 85°C (there is some bug that keeps the GPU under load while a second monitor is connected AFAIK), but I guess it was the same under Snow Leopard.

In Snow Leopard the sound output was always perfect even under heavy load or heavy HDD I/O.

Any ideas?

I'm finally reinstalling Lion as we speak.

What a shambles.  Had to buy another external hard drive a I didn't have enough room to backup everything I thought I might need once I've reinstalled the OS.

So my £13.99 investment has caused me nothing but headaches for three months and I've ended up spending £130 on a new drive to help me get rid of the cack that Apple supplied!

Ok...4 minutes until installation complete....please let it work!

You've runied Apple's grand plan.  This feature was to be included in OSX 10.9!!!  Oh well.

Glad you got it Pink.  I've been back on 10.7 for a couple weeks. It's definitly nice, but I'm sourcing copies of Windows 7 now as I want more control over things.  Giving Apple full control is obviously ill advised these days.

Heh. My audio dropping problem is fixed!

VLC auto-updated to 2.0.4 (from 2.0.3) and the problem when away. LOL. So it wasn't Apple's fault after all.

We can't even be sure we are suffering from the same problem to be honest, just that the symtoms are the same. Good luck to the rest of you.

Fingers crossed for you that your troubles are over. Mine wasn't just stuttering sound, I'm a photographer and work with Photoshop about up to 4 hours each night, I was getting 1 or 2 shutdowns a night and mouse lags every 45 minutes or so, nothing yet with Lion!

All good so far in Lion.  I've certainly been working Lion harder tonight than I have been with Mountain Lion over the last three months and not a hint of mouse lag, shutdowns, stuttering sound or anything else that makes me cry!

We have a famous hypnotist here in the UK called Derren Brown, I'd like him to erase my memory for the last three months so I can remember what it's like to love Apple.

Lion still working like a dream...! Why did I ever 'upgrade'...?!

Been working with someone higher up in Apple.  I've been sending him capture data of my system at recorded at the time of errors in the audio.  He recently got back to me and told me that their are memory leaks being caused by Safari, and also The Dictation (found in the System Prefrences)  He told me to try using Firefox instead of Safari for a while, and shut the Dictation off.  If the errors correct themselves then this issue has to do with these applications.  If not, he is going to have me re-install the OS on a clean drive.  Within the last year I have gone from Snow Lep, to Lion, to M.L.....I am wondering if reminants of past OS's have caused this problem.  I do not think it is happening to all people who are using ML.

This sounds goofy, but let's all stop using Safari for a while and try a different browser.  I read another thread which complains about Safari's problems with RAM.  I've been using firefox today and listening to music for over an hour without a skip or studder.  Sorry about all of the mispelled words and errors in my sentences in my above post.

I would be very surprised if that was the cause. I have never used voice dictation. Tbh I don't even know if its enabled or not. I also get the problems on a system that was greasy boot and safari not used.

Anyway my iMac is now on its way to Apple engineers to be ripped apart. The big question in my mind is what they will replace it with as my model is no longer in the store. They did say " the same or better".

I never use Safari or Dictation either. I only ever use Firefox.

I just can't see how it's hardware related seeing as the same computer works 100% perfectly now I'm back on Lion.
