update my iTunes 9 the download fails

I just bought an iphone4 S... When I pugged it into my imac, the phone didn't show up in itunes. I have iTunes 9 currently- when I try to upgrade my itunes software- my download fails every time... why? and if I can't get the download- is there any other way to get my iphone to show up?
