Why are so many people looking at this but not answering?

Hotmail Active Sync (Exchange) is only supported on IOS devices, you will have to use POP
This does not help me with Mountain Lion
Why not?, it works for everyone else.
Well I may sound stupid, but I have my email working on the mail server. My question is on mountain lion you go into the system pref then go to mail and accounts and there is a microsoft exchange account. Why is that there and how do I set it up?
One more time, Hotmail on a Mac IS NOT a Microsoft Exchange account, I repeat it IS NOT a Microsoft Exchange account.
You should use POP. in fact you must use POP with Hotmail.
Google it ......
Microsoft Exchange is a piece of software installed on a server, usually in a workplace, or you could buy it for your home PC but you'd need an actual server (extra PC) to run it through a WAN or Intranet, so it's not really feasible.
It is very misleading as a name to be honest as it makes people think it's a piece of software Miscrosoft use to run emails such as Hotmail or the new Outlook, but that is simply not the case.
So if you're linking to a work email that uses a Microsoft Exchange server then your workplace will be able to give you the exchange server details, such as is the case with one of my own workbased email addresses.
However from the posts I can see most people are referring to personal private Hotmail accounts (one of my other email accounts) which do not run through Microsoft Exchange Server software and are simple POP email accounts so to set them up with OS X or iOS you add the account as a POP account. i.e In your Mail client, just click on add account, type in the name and password and it will automatically add Hotmail.
You do NOT need to add any exchange server details. And you CANNOT see things like folders that you've set up in Hotmail on your Mail client, even if it is Microsoft Outlook, because POP doesn't allow this. You can however set up local folders and filters locally in your Mail client.
My suggestion if you want to see folders, that are also shown in your mail when you log in on the net, in your mail client at the moment is to get a gmail account which uses IMAP not just POP.
Thank you for responding in such a clear manner. I was confused because I didn't see the mail server that was on the older OS but now I have found it. On my iPhone I have hotmail set up as a Microsoft Exchange and it allows me to see all of my folders. This is why when I saw the image I posted I was confused on what server name to use. Thank you for your NICE answer. I get so tired of some people I have seen on forums who make fun of people for posting things. Not everyone sits and reads everything they can on the Internet and some people need a little more explanation. That does not make them an idiot. So I am glad there are a few people who can actually articulate themselves in a non-offensive manner.
You're very welcome wareagle, and I completely understand your frustrations. As a lecturer myself (English, Maths and IT) I know just how frustrating it can be when well usually meaning people, especially techies think they're explaining things clearly but really they aren't, so felt your pain.
I am glad my response could be of assitance, and as both an iPhone and iMac user I know there are a few little inconsitencies like the one you explained with Hotmail appearing to be an Exchange account on an iPhone.
The reason this is the case is because when you go into your email and on the first page you see something like this;
Hotmail shows with the same icon as an Exchange Server, such as the one above Hotmail in the image, which is my University account that IS a Microsoft Exchange Server account.
This will naturally cause confusion, but they are very different types of account and work in different ways, the ways explained in my previous response.
Perhaps this will clarify things further still and maybe help others too in future.
Incidentally you are right on an iPhone (iOS) Hotmail does allow you to see all of your folders, but it doesn't on a Mac (OS X). I believe this is because the mobile Hotmail (m.hotmail) that downloads to a phone works more like an IMAP account, it is not technically it's what's called an active server sync, but this isn't the case on the Webmail version (www.hotmail), it is purely POP.
That however is again not an issue of it using Microsoft Exchange Servers, in neither version does it do this; to my understanding.
This does not help me with Mountain Lion
To wareeagle2334:
I followed the instructions of Csound1, the post above yours to setup my Windows Live (Hotmail) account and it worked for me.
Try this it's work for me.
go to Mail > Prefernces > + to add account > add other mail account > your user name and pass
server address is : imap-mail.outlook.com
port : 993
I doubt that wareagle2334 has waited 2 years for the answer to his question.
This one worked for me as well
