how do I get me imac to play rented DVDs
All Netflix and red box DVDs won't play. Any purchased DVD is fine.

Probably dirty discs. Try wiping the off with a clean dry cloth or micro fiber towel, diapers work well also.
nope. not dirty disks. Something about apple not allowing me play them because I have the ability to rip them. I really just want to watch a rented DVDs on my imac.
found the answer to my own question. looks like you have to get an external DVD drive and use that. Appears as though apple happily disables rental play on their internal drives so they can say they are in compliance with all the piracy rules and regulations and hope that people just rent from iTunes instead of redbox or netflix.
Nope. Rented discs play fine in my iMac. Do you have a source for this information?
how old is your imac and what model do you have?
Late 2009 Quad core i5
hmmm. same here. what OS? when I attached my external DVD drive to it I was able to play a netflix DVD and two different redbox DVDs on my mac that won't play in the internal drive.
Snow Lepoard 10.6.8. My guess is that your internal drive is starting to develop problems. If I'm correct the problems will get progressively worse until no disc is recognized, I speak from experience as I've already had mine replaced under Apple Care.
I believe you are incorrect. My internal drive plays every purchased DVD with no issue. It is no concidence that every DVD that I rent won't play. when you upgrade to Lion and are on 10.7 I wonder if you will have problems with rented DVDs also as that is what OS I am on.
Is there anyone else out there that is running on Lion that can confirm if they are experiencing the same issue?!?!
I'll watch to see if other Lion users report the same. My problems started very selectively too and got worse as time went by. The slim internal drives used by Apple are VERY finicky and in my opinion not very reliable. Rented discs are more often than not, not in great condition whereas the discs you own probably are in very good condition. Hopefully for you I'm wrong......but I'm betting against it.
I have 27' Late 09 Imac running Mountain Lion and if I insert a Redbox Disc it tries to read then it spits it out. If I put it in external drive works just fine.
