That option is only available with iOS 5. To upgrade from iOS 4 to iOS 5 you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer.
Software Update in Settings was not introduced until iOS 5.0. If you are currently on an earlier version you have to connect to iTunes to update.
OK, then what do I do when I go to ITunes on my PC? I;m feeling really stupid here so feel free to baby me,
thanks

Did you connect the iPad?
It should automatically tell you there is an update available.
If it does not, click on the name of the iPad under the "DEVICES" menu, click Check for Updates.
So I searched for devices and found the iPad (which is connected to the computer) and it shows the iPad as a camera (which it is not) and not as anything else. This seems like the root of the problem. How do I change this?

Read this about how to disable that action on your PC. Hopefully if you disable the iPad being recognized as a camera, it will then appear properly in iTunes.

If that still doesn't work, look here for help in getting iTunes to recognize the device.
