dock indicator light not working

the dock indicator lights do not work aftr a wakeup from sleep. Can not tell if an app is running or not!


Also, a ritht click in the icon does not allow a quit application commcnd.


System is OK after a restart, but dock problems reappear after wakup from sleep.

I just got off the phone with Apple sopport, as I was experiencing the same thing. They said they had not heard of this issue. They had me unckeck the "show indicator light for open applications" in the Dock Preferences, and then Reboot the system. Then I rechecked the box, and things are back to normal. I however am not expecting this to fix the issue, as I suspect that pilot1 is correct in his assumption that it has to do with putting the machine to Sleep. I use the sleep feature often.


I will also add that the malfunction for me was a bit different. Some open applications had no lights on, while some applications I had closed still had a light on. When I clicked on closed apps with lights, they did not open, but the light went away. Very strange. I expect that the issue will return and I will be calling Apple support to open my case back up. I suspect a bug in Mountain Lion.

I have also been in contact with Apple Care Support. The tech supervisor did a remote look ay my system and clearly agrees that there is a major issue. He also said that they had not seen the isssue, or at least it wasent widespread.


Further investigation finds that mine is behaving that same as yours. At times it is very inconsistant. Also a right clock on the icon does not return the right context sensitive menu so it is impossible to quit a application other than opening up the force quit menu, and even that dosent work sometimes. Very Strange! I also found that if you log out and log back in you now have full functionality of the dock and inon right click commands. All is OK untill you put the system to sleep and wake it up from sleep. If you have other log in accounts, ssometimes that other log in is affected, and sometimes not effected. Again, seems strange.


In any case, The Apple Care Tech Support supervisor collected a lot of data remotly grom my machine and has turned the case over to engineering. I expect a call back from tech support this comming friday. By the way, this was my first experience with Apple Tech Support and at this point I am reall impressed. Yhey seem like they teally want to solve the issue and not pass it off to another vendor or software application as often would happen with microsoft issues. Good luck with your probles and if you find a fix, please share it.

Late Sunday afternoon. The AppleCare Senior Tech Advisor called and said that after remote analyis of my system, they noticed a lot of timeouts reguarding my desktop wallpaper pictures that were set up to rotate.


Previously, I copied a number of my phots into a folder where the Stock Apple desktop backgrounds are located. I then selected my photos and set them to to rotate in the normal manner. This worked fine under OS Lion but may have caused a conflict under OS Mountain Lion.


The Tech Advisor had me change the desktop background to a standard Apple background and reboot the system. After testing for about three or four hours, It looks like this was the fix for me. Wakeup from sleep, no problem, I now have full functionality of the dock again.


Previously, I tried to delete the file "com.apple.dock.plist" from the library/Preferences folder and reboot. This did not help me but you may give it a try. No harm done if it dosn't work. The operating system will rewrite the file during a reboot. If the file was corrupted, this may help.


Some further information: My system is a Mid 2011 Imac 27" and I am running dual monitors. This was a strange bug systems bug so I suspect it may be any number of things causing the problem.

So I opened my computer this morning after letting it sleep overnight and found to my dissmay that my problem is indeed, not fixed. Back to AppleCare to see what I can do now. I am at the point of going nuclear and doing a clean install but I really do not want to invest in the time it will take to reinstall all of my apps and data. After all, this was brought on by the installation of Mountain Lion and Apple should find a fix.


I am really dissapointed.
