The app store says I have an update
iWork Update 9.2
However when I click update it says
An error has occurred
The operation was cancelled. (3072)
PS My subject line includes "cats". You will find many funny cat sites by typing in funny cat videos into your favorite search function

Same exact thinghappened to me. Just upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8.
Can't cancel, can't restart the download, App Store says all purchases have been downloaded.

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Restart the Mac and try again.
iTunes may be open in other user in your computer like they say here:
After banging my head on this with reboots etc I just left it and it this just magically resolved itself 🙂

This was it exactly for me.
I had this error as well. But quitting Pages (an iWork app), which was open in another account, solved this issue.
- Open Finder Folder On Dock
- Select Mac HD Under Devices
- Open Library/Preferences
- Trash " com.apple.softwareupdate.plist " file
- Close Finder Window/Restart Computer
- Run Software Update (Should Work)
My solution to this was to log the other accounts out. Seems one of the other accounts was displaying an update message, though sure if it had tried to run the update or not. I logged out the other accounts, and the update worked fine.
My guess is that this is an exclusive lock type error.
It's true. I checked the other account and the program was open. After quitting it, the update worked.
