how to update to xcode 4.4?

Hi. I'm new to xcode and I'm on a shiny new machine with shiny new Mountain Lion on it. Can someone please tell me how to upgrade to xcode 4.4? Every time I install it from the App store, it installs version 3.x. I can't seem to control this. I recently paid my entrance fee for the dev thing on another, older machine (which is now deauthorized). I would like to use the new machine and my devices, which are iPhone 4s and iPad 3. It tells me I have to downgrade my iOS version if I want to use this version of xcode with those devices.

What I've done:

- click and drag the entire xcode folder to the trash

- search for and install xcode 4.4 from the App store

What happens is it just installs 3.x again and again.

Please help.

Thanks!
