Kernal panic preventing shut down after Mountain Lion upgrade

Following upgrade to Mountain Lion, kernal panics are stopping shut down of my Mac from the apple menu. I have a late-2009 Mac Mini. OS X closes as normal but then restarts with message "Your computer restarted because of a problem". I have performed disk verfication, repaired permissions, reset VRAM and SMC. Booting from original hardware disc allows a normal shut down, so I suspect this is software related (probably Mountain Lion?). Kernal panic report from Console is below.


Reading this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4135480?start=30&tstart=0 suggests problems with nvidia cards and Mountain Lion. My Mac Mini has the original nvidia card it shipped with (9600M) and if I disconnect the display just before shut down it (usually) seems to shut down normally so might be display related?


Other than the problem with shutting down everything is working normally. First instance of this problem was immediately after installing Mountain Lion. I am currently considering a full-reinstall of Mountain Lion from the recovery partition and using Time Machine to retrieve my settings etc, although I am concerned this will not work if it is a genuine bug.


Any assistance or solutions gratefully received!

Reverting to Lion from Time Machine has fixed the problem which tells me there is either a genuine bug in Mountain Lion or the installation was not performed properly.


Further thought makes me more certain that it is graphics related. My Mac Mini is plugged into a Samsung HDTV via DVI-HDMI adapter. When shutting down ML the TV briefly shows the message "Mode not supported" and the Mac then restarts (neither of which happen with Lion). I think ML is trying to get the TV to shut down as well or do something which the TV doesn't like. Hence the graphics kernal panics and forces a restart. When using safe mode in ML some graphics kernals are disabled and the problem does not occur.


Either way, some change that's been made between Lion and ML has caused an issue, which is a shame because ML was excellent, a definite improvement over Lion.

I have a similar problem with my 2009 27" iMac. Like you it did not happen in Lion but in my case it only happens occasionally. Today was the second time since installing ML on the first day of release. In my case I almost never turn the system off so I came into the room to see the "You shut down your computer because of a problem" message. Both times everything restarted just fine. Since my system has a radeon video card it looks like it is not related to the video card. Anyway, you are not alone on this one. I will be filing a bug report later today I guess.

Hey, I am currently having the same problem with a late 2009 13" Macbook Pro. It only happens sometimes but I dont know why, my laptop isn't even connect to anything except my external harddrive but I do not think thats the reason and I never had a problem using Lion.


By the way one important thing I noticed is that this problem only started after I did a software update of mountain Lion recently this week, which added facebook functionality. After this update the problem started popping up.

My friend, I have exactly the same issue, new (almost 1 month old) Mac Mini Mid 2011 with 8Gb (the same issue with 4gb and 2 gb), and I have an Samsung LCD TV Syncmaster 933 HD Plus. Random kernel panics on shutdown and restart. When I shutdown sometimes restart with panic, and when I restart, then restart with panic. I'm using HDMI to HDMI (without adapter). I made upgrade from Lion when the issue starts, then I made a clean install, and the issue is the same. I made an NVRAM (PRAM), repaired permissions, checked the disk, I'm only connecting the monitor, no usb drives, no sd cards, no usb dock cables....and the problem with random panic on shutdown/restart is the same. Can anybody help us? Steve Jobs can help us from heaven? Please I need help, I'm from Venezuela, sorry for my english.

It sounds like you have exactly the same problem as I have - nothing connected except the TV, permissions repaired, PRAM reset, etc.


Are you using Mountain Lion?? I had to downgrade to Lion to solve it. Unfortunately, a very similar problem occurs with the latest version of Lion (10.7.5). I'm sure that something with the latest updates is causing problems on certain Macs. I've filed a bug report with Apple so it may help if you do the same.


It could be a problem with using Samsung LCD TVs as monitors. Or maybe a graphics card issue - the user in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4316892?start=15&tstart=0 noted that a similar problem on a 2009 Mac Pro was caused by their (nvidia) graphics card driver.


Either way, I think it is something that Apple should address, even if it is only affecting a few users. Apple's mantra used to be that everything just works, but now I cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion with my setup (despite my Mac being easily capable of running it) and nor can I upgrade to Lion 10.7.5. It doesn't work as it should.

I know it sounds bad, but I'm happy to see more people reporting this. When I first experienced my issue on my late 11 mini the day that ML was released, I had no idea. I found out a while later it was display related. I'm also using a Samsung LCD. I reported to apple as it was happening, and I even filed a bug report with them, and waited for an update or this, but of course nothing happened.


Now, last night, I forgot to remove the tv cable on shutdown, and my mini just epped out. Unfortunately now it won't even recognize the startup disk, so it seems that my hard drive has crashed. Gutted. And my warranty expired last month.....


Can you buy warranty after expiration? I'm really chiefed about this.
