Since updating to Mountain Lion, I no longer see the spinning, grey 'retrieving mail' symbol when I force Mail to retrieve messages. Mail is being retrieved but it's weird not to get any feedback. Any ideas?

They eliminated the spinner in Mountain Lion. You can enable the "show mail activity". It's the center icon at the bottom of the sidebar.

Thanks but enabling 'show mail activity' doesn't do anything. The only way I see anything is if I do it via Window > Activity and then a separate panel appears. But why get rid of the spinner? It gave immediate feedback that something was happening and that the accounts were working. Now I don't know... Or am I missing a subtle benefit?! ;-)
The lack of anything in "show mail activity" has been reported in other forums and would apper to be a bug whihc I have reported via Apple Bug Reporter.
